Botox

I've been getting Botox injections for about 2 and a hlaf years and after increasing the dosage and changing doctors was getting pretty good results.

The last 2 time I got injections i had very little improvement, so i went back about 5 weeks later and got more injections and still am having a lot of spasms and my eyes are ususally halfway closed. I am also taking Klonopin. and sometimes take benedryl for sun-sensitivity.

I hope I haven't built up an immunity to the Botox.

Have any of you have this happen? Do susbseguent injections help?

For me, and I've only had botox 2 times, the second time hasn't been nearly as effective (same dr., same sites, and same amount!). I've heard that others have reported that botox can become ineffective after awhile of using it. My botox only works for about a month and IDEALLY it only works for about a week and then it starts going downhill from there! There seems to be as many variances in how botox works for people as there are people getting it!

Good luck!
Shanasy

Shanasy, my neuro told me that the first time is always the best for everyone. I disagreed. Didn't notice much difference then. I think it was about the third time that seemed to make definite improvement.

Well I hope you are right Sally - because then I have hope of maybe it getting better - I mean lasting longer. Only one week of good eyes doesn't make me too happy and my doctor doesn't believe in upping the dosage (I get 36 units).

Maybe, for some, its a build-up of botox `thing'. I get 90 units, so your 36 is quite a small dosage.

June in Toronto who can hardly wait to get her next set of injections on March 7th.

Nancy, Doctors and Allergan reps tell me that mostly beb patients don't usually build up an immunity to the Botox - but we all know that there must be exceptions to the rule. How many units of Botox do you now get?
I've worked my way up to 90 units and a couple of times had to go in back for boosters (especially for the blinking). I've had injections for over 6 years - usually at 4-6 month intervals. Have you checked out the injection sites postings that have been talked about here recently? Do you have copies of the injection sites your doctor used on you? Has he/she perhaps changed the injection sites? Others on the bb are far knowledgeable about this than I and can perhaps help you. I hope you find some answers. Good luck. There is a simple blood test they can do that shows if you have built up immunity. I had it, and the results were that I had not.

I didn't know they could check for botox immunity - interesting!

June, I get about 80-90 units. I will ask my doctor about changing the injection sites and will read the recent postings. Thanks

Hi Nancy,
It was pretty much the consensus at the 2000 conference in Kentucky from the doctors there that people getting botox for just BEB did not develop antibodies to botox. They said that they had only seen it in dystonia patients that received much larger doses (500-600 and more units) for multiple sites. They mentioned that it wasn't even worth doing the test to check for antibodies as they just weren't seeing it happen and the tests always came back negative for antibodies. Most of them no longer tested for this with their BEB patients.
If your eyes are halfway closed, you may be getting a ptosis from the injections which is usually technigue related. If the botox is injected too near the levator muscle which is in the middle of the upper lid, a ptosis will develop and that lid will just hang at half mast. You can open it but when you relax, the lid will just slowly slide back down. The location of the injections may need to be changed or the dosage or the technique. If your doctor will not work with you on this, you may need to change doctors.
Sometimes it just takes time to get everything right.

Shirley in AR.
