Does fluorescent lighting effect more than just your eyes?

I cannot help but feel there is some sort of "poison" in fluorescent lighting that effects more than just our vision, and I would like to pursue that research a bit.

Virginia and Christel have already told me that they feel the same possibility. Please let me know if this is true for you.

What I am referring to is: For example, when I go to our church ... a small sanctuary with a peaked white ceiling and brightly illuminated by those long rectangular fluorescent tubes (covered of course by a pretty glass/or facsimile strip) ... I can be all dolled up in my sunglasses with a visor pulled right down to the top of the glasses, and still be "done in" by that lighting. As the hour progresses, I feel something like rays going through my scalp (my visor is topless), my bare arms, and my face. Of course, my eyes have already clamped tightly shut, but by the end of the service I am beginning to feel woozy and have a headache. I practically run for the front door and the fresh air.

This experience is the same for me any time I am in a meeting room with that type lighting. The cylinders are a bit more tolerable and I can remain for a longer period of time.

I just wonder what those lights are emitting and how whatever it is might actually effect our systems, not just our eyes. We in this area are just now coming to realize the effects that the nuclear fallout from Hanford (near Kennewick, WA) had on us and our health in the 1940s. This area was downwind of Hanford and MANY brain tumors, other cancers, MS, lupus, etc., are believed to be a result. It is pretty drastic. Could fluorescent gas (or whatever it is) someday prove to have had a similar effect?

Sorry this is so long, but I've been pondering it for quite some time now and it really interests me. I'll appreciate any comments. Thanks.

My wife and I both have problems with flourescents. Mine are from BEB and hers from lupus. Here is a quote I got from a lupus site "Individuals with lupus may be sensitive to ultraviolet light and want to avoid exposure to the sun and other known sources such as fluorescent lighting." - So we are not the only ones and for them it comes in through the skin.

Larry, would you mind telling what type of lupus your wife has?

Thank you, Larry, for your input. As I posted below under Christel's fluorescent explanation from her husband, many years ago when I was in my 30s, two doctors suspected that I had lupus. The tests came back negative, but one doctor said he would go on record of being certain that eventually I would test positive and would have it.

As I posted below, I remember a woman in our church coming to the sanctuary all bundled up in veiling and long sleeves, wrap around black glasses and hurrying to get out of the room after the service. She was very adversely effected by the fluorescent ceiling lights also.

Food for thought for us to ponder on. Maybe all our supposedly off-the-wall questions and theories might someday help with research. That would be wonderful.

I'd appreciate any other ideas you and your wife might come up with on this subject.

Good luck. Hope to see you on the BB more frequently.

Sally, except that fluorescent lights are extremely bothersome to my eyes, I haven't noticed the other symptoms you mentioned. Did you feel that before you had BEB ? Sounds very curious, wonder if anyone else shares that experience.

fluorescent lighting effects more than just eyes

I know in my Holistic circles we have discussed the negative effects of fluorescent lighting as actual environmental pollution to the internal and external body and earth. For the life of me I can't remember what kind of research or where the data came from, but I can so some investigation. There are probably some BB folks who read but don't post who know what I'm talking about. When my BEB first started being a problem at work, as soon as I walked into the building I could feel a difference in my eyes and body.(FMS people don't do well with that type of lighting either...which doesn't surprise me because it is a brain disorder too!)

That's interesting, Delaine, and supports Sally's claim of feeling physically affected by the fluorescent lighting. Perhaps some people are more susceptible than others. I'd certainly be interested in obtaining more data on this subject.

Flourescent & Mercury Vapor lighting

Flourescent lighting affects my eyes adversely (an understatement) but also causes my head to shake & turn (ST) and shoulders to jerk. The mercury vapor actually feels as if it is burning me.

Judy ... Doesn't that give credence to my theory that "it" permeates the skin and is somehow absorbed into the system? Doesn't just have an effect on our photosensitive eyes. I really believe this thread deserves research. Who knows, perhaps someday the powers that be will listen to our speculation and do some testing.

Glad to see you back on the BB!
