Thanks to the BB

I am so excited - thanks to what I have learned on the BB I started to make some more enquiries re Botox availability in Perth. I started by checking out Jenny's info re Fremantle Hospital and ran into a brick wall. After spending nearly 10 minutes on the phone (long distance!) I got no-where. They had never heard of Botox or Blepharospasm and I was talking to their eye clinic !!!! Next I found out via the Internet that there was a Neurological Council in WA so I emailed them re a movement disorder specialist neurologist. They got back to me almost immediately with a list of 4 names and one was marked as 'very knowledgeable'. So I rang the number and the receptionist said this particular doctor did not do Botox BUT HER HUSBAND DID!!! I was just so amazed as the AMA has always said only one person did it in WA. I asked under what conditions he did the injections and it is on demand!!!! He is actually an Ophthalmologist but appears to be working in practice with his wife, the specialist neurologist so I imagine he would be up on things. The receptionist said that they definitely did not operate under clinic conditions and that as long as they had a bit of notice they could get the Botox from someone else if they had none in stock when it was required. I still can't quite believe it after all these years of putting up with the clinic. Of course, I still have to check it out thoroughly but my General Practitioner is a friend so I'll get him to make enquiries. I am just so excited. This will change my whole life because with the injections I am just fine - it is when they start to wear off the trouble starts. But I must hasten slowly - I do not want to jump out of the frying pan into the fire. I am going up to Perth on Thursday week for the clinic so I won't make a move until after then.

This is all thanks to you girls. I love you all.

Lyn,
I'm so glad that you have found some alternate places to check out. Keep checking around and find somebody really good.
On my last trip to get my botox which is 7 hours away, I talked to my MDS who I really like, but would like to find someone closer. Since I've had the myectomy surgery and will just be getting the injections in my lower lids, I told him that I was going to try our local MDS again, who is a nice person but doesn't see many Blepharospasm patients. He looked at me and said "NO", you need to see someone who knows what they are doing. He said for me to come back to see him for now and he was planning a trip to Arkansas in a couple of months at the Teaching Medical Center here in my city and he would inquire around when he was here and find me someone. He said to call his office and gave me a date to call by to remind him so that he wouldn't forget. I could have hugged him.

Shirley in AR.

Hi Shirley - you are lucky to have such a caring doctor. Mine knows I need the injections but won't give them until he has a clinic. I shall make some enquiries about this new ophthalmologist before I see him and hope he checks out ok.

Lyn, how wonderful that you were able to get such beneficial information from this site. There are good things here, in spite of all our clowning around. I'm really hoping that everything will fall into place for you to have individual treatment. Keep us posted.

Hi Sally - yes, can't wait to find out a bit more about this new ophthalmologist. At least it has given me hope that there will be an alternative to my present situation.

Hi Lyn. Well I can't beleive they didn't know anything about it at Freemantle. Maybe it was the neurologist dept. I'm waiting for an email from my mum who is having trouble with her computer, to see if she still has any record of him. My Dr in Auckland knows him to so I could find out from him, if you still want to know.
If you changed to someone closer and you didn't like them you can always go back to the old Dr anyway.
Glad it works so well for you and I too have learned lots from the BB.
Thankyou everyone. I read the BB everyday and I would be lost without it. Bye for now. Jenny in NZ

Hi Jenny - yes, Fremantle was a dead loss. It may well have been the Neurology Department but after having spent 10 minutes at long distance rates being passed from pillar to post via the Eye Clinic I gave up and tackled the names I had been given by the Neurological Council of WA, with great success. I will ask my GP to find out a bit more about the new ophthalmologist, how long he has been giving Botox and so on, before I see him. I would still be interested to know the name of the doctor in Fremantle - the more avenues of treatment I know about the better. Thanks.
