Re: Hi everyone, whats good for dry eyes
Jenny,
It may take some experimenting to find what is just right for you. I use an ointment with as much petrolatum as I can find. Moisture Eyes PM works for me. Lacrilube has less petrolatum and might be preferable for those who don't like the gooey feel. GenTeal Gel, which Kathy mentioned, is another option. I use it during the day when I need moisture because drops just don't do much for me. When I do use drops, I use Thera Tears in a bottle (more convenient when I'm away from home)with "disappearing preservative." I also sleep with a sleep mask, since I was having a problem with one eye not closing after surgery. I sometimes have the same problem after botox injections. Hope this helps - I'm sure others will have their favorites. Virginia in AL
Re: Hi everyone, whats good for dry eyes
Hi Jenny, It's real good to hear from you. It's been a long time. I see that Virginia has already listed my favorites for treating dry eyes so won't repeat what she has already said. I do think that the sleep mask is also very important like Virginia mentioned. I have several different kinds. They are not all created equally. Some don't fit on me real well and you do want to have one that will keep the air out and keep your eyes closed so you may have to try different ones before you find one that works for you.
Drops that you use through the day should always be preservative free as you will be using a lot of them and we tend to develop sensitivities to the preservatives that can cause irritation and redness, aggravating the situation.
I'm glad that you checked in with us. You are welcome here anytime.Shirley in AR. Any change in your condition?
Re: Hi everyone, whats good for dry eyes
Eye drops don't do very much for me, but eye ointment at night with a gel mask works works very effectively. I wear it most of the night, but usually wake up at least once and remove it. I use Refresh PM and have also used other brands and did buy some Gen-Teal gel also.
Hope you find something that works for you!

Re: Hi everyone, whats good for dry eyes
Hi Jenny ... It's SO GOOD to "see" you again. Like Shirley, I am wondering how your condition is these days. All the above answers have been good ones. I hate the gooey feeling of most ointments and have not been able to get to a store to buy GenTeal ointment yet. Most seem to think it is less greasy.Come back often and soon. Sally in North Idaho
Re: Hi everyone, short update
Hi everyone, a quick update.Im not seeing the doctors anymore, as they just want to experiment with new drugs - Im not willing to take the risk, cos one of the drugs knocked the condition on much worse. However, not working is the most horrendous thing, I am limited now in what I can do round the house, and am constantly assessing my energy levels, so as not to end up too tired. but tho it is progressing as you can see for my request, it is doing so slowly, and Im getting used to coping. I will be a granny in about 4-8 weeks, and that is God's gift that I look forward too. The baby is a boy by the way and they have decided to call him Joshua. Love you all, God bless
Jenny
Re: Hi everyone, short update
Are you not taking any medications at all any more? Which one made the condition worse?I hope you feel better, and congratulations on your new grandson. Margarita
Re: Hi everyone, short update
Hi, the first drug which caused the reaction was carbomazapine, and Im Phenytoin now - it works marginally, but mostly it is putting wrong the effects of the other one lol.God bless everyone Jenny
Re: Hi everyone, short update
Congratulations on soon to be becoming a new granny. I hope that progression of your disease slowwwwws waaaay down. You are always welcome here, so keep us posted. Good luck with the dry eye problem. For any newbies out there, Jenny does not have Blepharospasm but when she first started posting on this board, she thought that she did. She has another chronic disorder that is very rare that she is dealing with. Shirley in AR.
Re: Hi everyone, short update
Hi Jenny, Congratulations on your upcoming grandson. I have one grandson 8 1/2 months old. He is such a joy to us. I told a friend that if I would have know how exciting it was being a granny I would have bugged our daughter about having one much sooner. Actually I never did bug them about it at all, guess I had read Ann Landers too many times and knew that wasn't appreciated.

Re: Hi everyone, short update
yes, congratulations on the impending arrival! my first grandchild is about 15 months now and i recently saw him for the first time. there is nothing like the feeling of being a first time grandmama. i'm still getting used to it.
Re: Hi everyone, whats good for dry eyes
I notice both Kathy and Sally mention not having GenTeal b/c haven't been able to get to the store. If it is hard for you to find, or to get out where it might be located, I'd be happy to get it for you and mail it. I know when I first started using TheraTears, I had to have it special ordered b/c the local drugstores didn't carry it. Now they do. But I do also use the GenTeal ointment.I also sometimes use another product that has to be special ordered. I first heard of it from the Sjogren's folks (one of my many early misdiagnoses). It's called Lacriserts (requires a prescription - it's made by Merck). They are sort of little pellets - they look like bits of tiny plastic, I think something like Methylcellulose - that are tucked into the outside corner of the eyelid and slowly dissolve. After several hours they get pretty sticky and I find I eventually have to remove them (they never seem to completely dissolve b/f I get to that point). On the very rare occasions when vanity strikes hard (like for my daughter's wedding) and I REALLY don't want to wear my glasses, I find I can manage for a few hours with my old soft contact lenses, if I use Lacriserts and add some eyedrops from time to time. Otherwise, my eyes are SO dry that the lenses just dry up and literally fall out.
Re: Hi everyone, whats good for dry eyes
How thoughtful you are, Jaelline! Thank you so much for the offer to send GenTeal gel; however, last time I went to town I had planned to go by Walmart and get some ... then when I stopped in at my regular pharmacy to pick up refills, I glanced at their eye care shelf and they had some!! A pleasant surprise.Sally in North Idaho where it is very cool today. People are complaining of the lack of summer, but I'm not!
