Re: Sinusitis and voice
A couple of years ago I began getting these terrible sinus headaches and sinus pressure. I have had allergies all my life so assumed, as did my doc that I had a sinus infection. After 3 rounds of antibiotics I had a sinus x-ray and my sinus cavities were clear. The pain/pressure is related to the meige. My jaw clenches all night and then causes my neck to be tight and that is causing the headaches. I am hoarse alot but don't know if it is from post nasal drip or if I have very mild spasmodic dysphonia. It isn't bad enough for me to seek an opinion on yet.
Re: Sinusitis and voice
I have the same problem with my sinuses and post nasal drip, but not my voice (at least not yet). People are constantly offering me tissues and asking about my "allergies". I've tried Claritin and Flonase, too, and neither helps. I have found that Nasalcrom does help some, although I don't know why. It does dry out my nose some, so I use saline spray when I feel the need. Sudafed also helps, though my doctor cautioned me against using it too much because it can cause blood pressure to rise. It also dries out my mouth, so I save it for when I feel it is really necessary.I'm not trying to diagnose, but there is a type of dystonia which can affect your voice. The link below is about spasmodic dysphonia. You might want to look it over and see if it seems to fit. Then you could discuss it with your doctor. Virginia in AL

Re: Sinusitis and voice
My voice is hoarse a lot and I blamed it on sinus drainage, but since I've had the BEB my throat often feels tight or just plain tired. I have a first cousin who has vocal dystonia and has taken Botox for at least 12 to 13 years in her vocal cords. For years she was told she had strained her vocal cords and told not to speak for months at a time and told it was all in her head and sent to psychiatrists. She finally found a doctor who knew what was wrong. We've discussed several times on the BB how many of us have suffered from chronic sinusititis and allergy symptoms for years and wonder if there is a connection. When you look at the nerves involved with BEB/Meige you can see they go right through and around the sinsuses.
Re: Sinusitis and voice
Jan: Your situation is very similar to mine but sort of reversed... I was tested because of a variety of problems many of which sound similar to yours - congestion deep in the sinuses, loss of my voice, dizziness, so they did all of the usual tests: MRI, CT Scan, sinus camera. In my case they found a problem with a couple improperly developed sinus cavities. I've been procrastinating on the surgery because of the BEB. The real surprise is that my ENT doctor thought that my dry eyes were not dry eyes but something neurological- like so many of us I'd been to many doctors about my eyes and had no good answer. She sent me to an opthamologist specializing in the optic nerve - he diagnosed the BEB. Like you I've wondered about a possible connection though the MD's say there isn't one.Good Luck Owen
Re: Sinusitis and voice
Thanks so much for the info and I'll keep you posted as to
anything I find out. My next Dr's appointment is Friday.
Re: Sinusitis and voice
Hi Jan, I don't have a voice problem, but have noticed sinus problems after the last 3 sets of botox injections. The neuro says it doesn't have anything to do with botox but I disagree as within 1-2 days after getting the injections I'm suffering from sinus (as I am now after getting botox recently). I was checked out by an ear/nose/throat specialist and nothing came of that. Good luck with your problems and I hope you will keep posting.June in Toronto
Re: Sinusitis and voice/june
june, i am already getting the congestion and sinus stuff that you are mentioning. had my injections on tuesday.
Re: Sinusitis and voice/jan
how great that you could finally find out what was wrong with you!
Re: voice and yelling
For many years, even before BEB, I cannot yell or my throat will hurt and I will lose my voice.
Does this happen to anyone else?
thanks,

Re: voice and yelling
For a very long time, my voice will just go if I do any lengthy amount of talking. Excessive talking also will cause me to cough or get choked. Face turns red, difficulty catching my breath. you get the picture.Shirley
Re: voice and yelling
Regarding the sinusitis and my voice - I went to the ENT doctor last
Friday and according to her my congestion is all cleared up and
she doesn't have a clue so she has referred me to a speech therapist
pathologist for muscular dysphonia. I asked her weeks ago if my
problem might be related to spasmodic dysphonia and she replied
"No you don't have that" So now I wait for approval of my
referral to a new specialist. Meanwhile, I still feel as if I
have post nasal drip and a sore throat and I can hardly talk.
My voice is very strained and I have been talking as little as
possible. However, I have noticed that I've had trouble with
my voice for about two months now and it has been consistent.
It does not clear up at times like the BEB does.
Also - my next botox shots are on the 28th so we'll see if I
end up with sinusitis again.
It seems like this bulletin board is really helping all of us
to cope with many of our problems - despite the medical doctors.
Thanks so much, Jan
Re: voice and yelling
Hi Jan,
Glad to hear that you got a referral to a speech therapist. Just keep after things and believe in yourself and take control of your own health care. You know more about yourself than anyone does.
Keep in touch and let us know how the speech therapist appointment goes or anything else that you want to talk about.Shirley in AR.
