I am informed by our current WDD, Dow Watkins, that he is retiring next week (Apr 1) but that his replacement is "our own" Shirley Barr.

Congratulations, Shirley!

Dow also wrote,

"Shirley says she is looking forward to the challenges of this new job, ad particularly to hearing from all of you and for your help in taking on this new responsibillity. You in turn can look forward to hearing from her as she gets into this new job. I'm sure you will agree that she is a wonderful choice."

I AGREE!

--- Lynn

THANK YOU, Shirley, for taking on this responsibility. Of course you will do valiantly! I doubt that any other group has such super leaders.

THANK YOU, too, Dow, for your years of wonderful service. You deserve to have a wonderful retirement!

Thanks Lynn and also Joanne, Cynthia and June, Mary, Lyn and Ann. I hope that I'm up for the task!
Dow has been taking care of the Western District for the past 20 years. I'm going to be going into this pretty "green" but Dow and the other District Directors (Anita, Nilda and Linda) have all offered me lots of support and encouragement. I'm looking forward to being in touch with all the State Coordinators and Area Representatives in the Western District. Right now, I don't even know who they all are but I'm sure that I will soon find out. ;-)

June, I'm not sure that I can answer your question very well but I'll touch on it. Anita or Nilda maybe can jump in here and add to it.

A few of the things that the District Directors do:

Appoints State Coordinators and Area Representatives...
Maintains a list of patients, physicians and medical facilities for that district...
Stays in touch with the BEBRF and Mary Lou Thompson to do any problem solving or projects that may come up...
Quarterly reports of happenings in district...
Encourage and assist State Coordinators and Area Representatives within district...
Attend annual BEBRF conference, district director's meeting and Board of Director's meeting...
Answer the phone when it rings as it may be a new patient wanting information...

That will give you a little idea of some of the things that the District Directors do.
Thanks again for the congratulations.

Shirley in New Mexico who has only lived in the Western District for 6 months. I just thought that I was going to get to hide. ;-)

Thanks Catherine. I really had been hiding a bit. It's very easy to be reclusive in our new location. I had lived in Arkansas all my life and after working in various hospitals and doctor's offices and then being a school nurse for some 10 years, I knew quite a few people. Everytime I went to the grocery store or just about anywhere I would run into people that I knew. I was really tired of trying to explain to people why they hadn't seen me at work or what was wrong with my eyes or if I was "doing better yet". They meant well but with all the attention and standing around chatting about it, my symptoms would just be worse. :-( Most of the time, I just chose to stay at home.
I've actually gotten out more since we've been here and since I don't know a soul, when I walk into the stores, I can just shop and not worry about any questions. It's been a relief. I still don't drive and hubby has to take me everywhere. We have met a few people since we've moved and I have explained symptoms and Blepharospasm to them briefly but it's pretty much a live and let live atmosphere and none of them appear overly concerned or terribly interested. I'm very happy to teach people about Blepharospasm if they are interested but don't want to dwell on it with those who aren't.

I've found a good place to be.

So do you do all this from home shirley or do you have to go to an office? Thanks for the recount of your duties - its sounds a lot, but knowing you, you will tackle it head on and do splendidly.

Hi June,
Yes, I will do all this from home with the exception of the meetings. (No office...just my home) Most of the meetings are in conjunction with the annual conferences but one is in Texas (where the BEBRF has their office).
All the District Director positions are made up of volunteers as well as the Area Representatives and the State Coordinator positions.

Thanks again June for the vote of confidence. I'm hoping that I can handle it ok. :-)

Being very new to this blepharospasm stuff, can you tell me what states the western district covers? I am in North Dakota and don't know of anyone else in this area with this disorder, nor am I aware of any support groups in this area.

First let me say that I'm so pleased to have Shirley as one of our District Director's. I have shared with her that I will give her any help that she might need and we will do this one step at a time. I'm sure Shirley would be interested in having all the Western District State Coordinators and Area Representatives names, addresses and email address unless Dow Watkins has passed this information off to her. As a District Director, one of our jobs is to report to the 1st Vice President who is holding support meetings, when and where. (This is not all, of course). This not only should be reported to our Foundation, but to the District Director. So, please help Shirley out if you hold the position of State Coordinator or Area Rep. in the Western District.

Second, I am over the state of North Dakota. Even though I don't have many people in the state, it's possible you might be of some help to me Lynn. Are you interested? If so, I might like to talk with you.. Do you have our Blue Book for Patients and Families? My phone number is in there or you could send me your phone number and I would call you. I have someone representing every state in the North Central District except for North Dakota. Eager to hear from you.

Anita Croce, North Central District Director, BEBRF

Thanks for the input...I'm going to need all the help that I can get.

Anita,

I'm not sure how I can help you in North Dakota from my home in SoCal. Are you REALLY that desperate for help? :-) (I am currently the area rep for Riverside County, CA, one of the largest counties in the US, although it's mostly desert.)

Anybody can call me at pretty much any time. (760)360-4006.

Hi Kathleen,
The Western District includes:
Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

The US is divided up into four districts:
North Central (Anita Croce), Eastern (Nilda Rendino), Southern (Linda Webb) and Western (Dow Watkins and as of April 1st-me)

North Dakota would be in the North Central District, along with Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

In case anyone else is curious...the Southern District includes:
Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.

And the Eastern District includes:
Connecticut, Delaware, Washington DC, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

Kathleen, email or call the BEBRF and they can send you names and phone numbers of people in your area that you can contact and tell you if there is a support group close to you. Their email address is: bebrf@sbcglobal.net

Thank you so much for the information. I have found the contacts on this BB to be so helpful and it is such a relief to know that this support system is out there. I just recently subscribed to the BEBRF newsletter and will contact them about other folks they may know of in this area. I'm sure my neurologist treats others with beb, but with privacy laws I know I won't get any information from there. I have included my email address, so feel free to contact me if you'd like

Shirley, congratulations. I cannot think of a better person to handle the job. You have a real desire to help people with these diseases and your humor will only add to the relationships you will be able to develop with fellow patients. I am sure that you will also be a big help to the area representatives and state coordinators do their jobs..Alan
