voice activated software

G'day

Just wondering if any of you have tried any of the available packages for voice activated software.

Given wher I am at at the moment i am looking at what may be possible for me to stay at work.

i am interested in both the dictation software as well as anything that will read my incoming mail/documents

the way the eyes are at the moment I think if I could get something that would at least take part of the load off I could function quite OK at work.

Cheers

Scott

Hi Scott,

I've heard it doesn't work well with accents. I have a friend with a British accent and she had all kinds of problems with it. I don't know which software program she used. There are a lot out there. Hope you can find one that understands Aussie! :-)

Cheers,

I did some research on it several years back for NASA and didn't find it very good unless custom tailored to individuals' voices. Since then I think it has probably improved a lot. But it depends on the particular software that you get. You are right to ask questions. I don't know anything about those currently on the market.

Now Virginia, you've been withholding information again. What's this about research for NASA? So, is the Master Gardener thing a cover for what you really do? ;-)

Yes, Shirley, I actually had a career once upon a time. The gardening thing came after that.

Virginia, please tell us you were an astronaut!! That would make you seem even more glamorous than I already think you are.

Now we no longer have to continually ask questions of Shirley's "nerd" guys since you have admitted to being a computer "geek" yourself. It will be nice to have our very own "geek" on the board.

Not even close, Sally. I worked for companies that did government contract work - there's a lot of that here with a NASA facility and an army base. I started in the days of big computers and quit before everyone had a PC on their desk. The field has changed so much since I started. Notice I said "ex"-geek. I would like to know more, but there is only so much time in the day and only so much energy in the body.

By the way, how are you feeling? I've been wondering about you and your sciatic nerve.

Hey Virginia, would you just leave it alone. :-) It sounded better the first time you stated "did a little research work for NASA". I cannot harass you if I feel sorry for you. Now take it back and make it sound a little bit snooty. ]-)

I've already got reputations that I don't deserve. I just couldn't let it slide. But, there is no need to feel sorry for me - it was good work and paid well. Would you feel better if I said Carl is a rocket scientist?

Oh Virginia, I don't really feel sorry for you. If you didn't keep throwing out these little tidbits for me to latch on to and use against you, then you wouldn't have all these reputations that you don't feel like you deserve. :-) That really didn't make a whole lot of sense. Besides, I love it when you give me ammunition to use against you. You know I get bored if I can't pick on someone and Alan hasn't given me a whole lot to pick on him about lately.
I like the idea of Carl being a "rocket scientist". I refuse to pick on him, though. You would tell on me. :-)

We discussed this once before and I bought the middle priced, Naturally Speak and never did get it to understand my Southern accent. I finally gave up. That was about 3 years ago and I updated computer 2 years ago and reloaded and retrained program several times. I think Virginia once said most were developed in California and seem to understand that accent better.
