Cranio Sacral Therapy / Massage

Posted by kerry horton ® (KERRY HORTON,kerry horton), Dec 11,2001,20:12   Archive
I just heard about this form of massage therapy called "Cranio-Sacral Therapy". According to the founders of the therapy it is supposed to be helpful for many things including Central Nervous System and "eye-motor coordination problems."
Has anyone ever tried this?
Just wondering... The link for their web site is attached in case anyone else wants to look into it.
Thanks,
Kerry in CT

Hi Kerry,

We went through this CST thing a while back. Some people tried it and it didn't do much for them and others will swear by it. Maybe you can do a search and find some old posts in the archives.

I am a firm believer! I went to a physical therapist several years ago who specialized in cranio/sacral therapy. I was having pain in my jaw, neck and under my shoulder blade from the meige which in turn reaggrevated a previous neck injury. After 6 weeks I was pain free for almost a year. I now see a muscular therapist every month who does alot of cranial work as well as a special type of massage/corrective bodywork. After driving 2 hours in traffic to the airport in Feb my shoulder blade flared up again. It felt like a knife was being twisted and I was tingling all the way down to my hand. She worked it out in one VERY intense session. She does myofacial release and cranial work for my jaw spasms from the meige as well. I truly can't say enough about her - God has given her a truly remarkable gift. Unfortunately finding someone who is highly trained and "good at what they do" isn't always easy but they are priceless when you find them.

Hi Kelly:
Thank you, thank you, thank you.... even the thought that this might possibly give Mom a little relief is so great. I'm glad you found an "angel". Hope ours is as good.

Let me know how it goes. I don't get alot of relief from the actual eyelid spasm but do get relief from the pain and radiating spasms that beb causes. I see her again right after Christmas and can't wait! She truly is a godsend.

I originally had cranio/sacral from a licensed physical therapist about 3 years ago. I found out about her from a friend who has scoliosis and she highly recommended her. Cindy (the PT) refers clients out to Constance (muscular therapist) for maintenance work when you don't need a PT scipt but need relief. Constance was trained at the CORE Institute and I keyed this into the AOL search engine and found their website when I was looking for someone in Tn for my mom. There are also websites for canio/sacral and some may have locators there as well. Finding someone good is the key. My neuro wants her business cards next time I come in so she can refer patients to her. I remember last summer I had a huge knot in my neck and after a couple of weeks called a local massage place and got an appt that day. When she felt the knot she said "Oh, you need to see someone about this." I thought that was why I was there! I then called Constance and got in to her the next week and she fixed me right up!
Let me know if you try it.
Kelly

I get knots in my neck from the meige - I clench my jaw all night long and wear a night guard but it doesn't prevent the neck problems. This time it was much worse because my dog had just died and crying sent everything into a tailspin - eyes, jaw, throat, you name it. It took 6 weeks to recover from 2 days of tears.

Am so sorry to hear about the passing of your dog. I totally understand that as my golden retriever, Beaumont, my best pal of 11
years died this past Feb. I had to miss that appt. for botox injections since I contracted the worst case of the flu in years and of course, exacerbated blepho symptoms. My sympathies for you.

Hi Kathy - in answer to both of your questions...

At that time you could actually feel a knot the size of a golf ball. Normally I can feel small knots more like pebble size. It is wild how one area of the body in pain can actually be caused by another area. Mine is my hips. When she can't get my neck to "let go" and loosen up she works my hips which are always sore and then goes back to the neck and it loosens up then. The whole thing seems weird the way she can actually "shift" your body back in balance and use release techniques to relieve spasm but it truly works!

About the dog - we had 2 schnauzers luckily. Cinder was 8 1/2 when she died and Ashes is now 8 1/2. We considered a puppy right after because everyone was so sad but with time we have adjusted to only having Ashes and honestly I don't think I am physically up to the challenge of a new puppy right now. Having a 3 and 6 year old and a dog is enough. And as I previously posted, the judge at my SSD hearing told me he was going to request that I have my drivers license revoked. I'm very hopeful and optomistic of keeping a restricted license but I need to keep life as simple as possible right now.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I know how hard that can be. Five years ago, I had to put my 17 year old dog to sleep. She was in too much pain that couldn't be fixed. My first thought when I woke up was "She's gone." It was dreadful. I now have 3 unbehaved loveable dogs. very spoiled. I had 7 children and made them mind. I knew they had to go out into the world and would need discipline. Ann Doyle

I use this type of therapy for my meige symptoms and related neck problems. It doesn't help my eyes at all but really helps the pain associated with the meige!

I don't receive botox in the neck so I don't know but it really does help so it would be worth a shot. The hard part is finding someone highly skilled. The woman I see was trained at the CORE Institute and they have a website with a therapy locator. I just keyed in Core Institute into the search engine when I was looking for my mom in Tn. A friend of mine sent me to Constance and I have sent another friend. Ruthie called me to thank me - she doesn't know how she would function without her. And neither do I!
