Re: Shirley * Benidryl???
Hi Cindy, yes, the Benadryl is a non-prescription over the counter medication commonly uses for allergies. The active ingredient is Diphenhydramine HCL usually 25mg per capsule or tablet. I buy the generic Wal-Mart brand for less than $5 per 100 capsules.Benadryl is named in the list of drugs that has been known to cause dystonia. For most, it is a reasonably safe medication to try and is given in the hospital IV for acute dystonic reactions. So, it is one of those things that can help many but has been suspected or thought to cause problems in others.
It is also in a lot of "sleep preparations" that are "over the counter".
For most people, when it is initially taken, it can make you very sleepy. That wasn't such a bad thing for me when I started taking it a couple of years ago as I was so depressed that all I wanted to do was hide and sleep anyway. When one tries a new drug, you just have to weigh your options and realize that all medications have any number of side-effects. You should always check with your doctor before trying something. Some medications don't "mix" well with others and some medications shouldn't be taken with certain health problems. Drugs with anticholinergic properties are known to help some people with different forms of dystonia. Artane, Scopolamine, Parsitan and Cogentin all have anticholinergic properties but are prescription medications. People have had varying degrees of success with them. Shirley in Arkansas who thinks that she "over" answered Cindy's question. Drug lesson over.
Re: Shirley * Benidryl???
Good advice, Shirley. I also take it (in a generic version) but have never used it for BEB relief: I am simply allergic to a ton of stuff. But, for those who want to use it for ANY reason, CostCo's house brand is 'way cheaper: under $10/1000. --- Lynn
Re: Benadryl cost and allergies
Lynn, maybe it helps your BEB and you've just never been aware of it. :-)
Alas-I have no CostCo! ;-(
I seem to have a lot of allergies, too (minor) as I have a lot of nasal drippiness and lungs tend to get congested easily with me having a minimal cough on an on-going basis. Haven't really been sick, though, since I developed BEB 3 years ago. I'm sure that is due to the fact that I don't get out as much as I used to so am not exposed to a lot of things.
Is the "spelling thing" getting easier for you? Hope so.Shirley who is really, really hoping for snow.

Re: Benadryl cost and allergies
Hi Shirley. Don't you have Sam's Club or something like that in your area? That's basically the same as Costco, I think.

Re: Benadryl cost and allergies
Hi Evelyn, We do have a Sam's Club (one of my favorite places to go) but they do not carry a generic Benadryl-just the name brand which costs the same there as it does at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart does carry a generic though, so I buy it there.Shirley in Arkansas who has been out playing in the snow and having hubby drive me all over so that I could take pictures of the snow and trees and the snowmen that kids have built. The streets were fine and not too many people out.
Re: Benadryl cost and allergies
That's a shame that SC doesn't carry the generic brand. Your snow capers sound like fun.
I've been trying to get a head start on Spring cleaning. I still have a ways to go, but things are looking good.
Evelyn, where the snow is long gone, and the rain took over again.
Re: Spring cleaning/Evelyn
Wow, are you ambitious, Evelyn. Just make sure you don't strive for perfection as that could get a person banned from the BB. :-)
When you are done with your house, you are more than welcome to start on mine, you know, just in case you get bored.Christel in Ca. where we haven't had any snow, I'm still waiting for it.
Re: Spring cleaning/Evelyn
Hi Christel,
I don't think there's ever such a thing as perfection in keeping house, because it seems to "pile up" with clutter almost as soon as you're finished cleaning:) I'm just glad I've been feeling well enough to do it. Today, I didn't do much...I'm in the middle of sorting recipes. Just think, last year I couldn't see to do much reading. I'm glad I can see better. I even finished our taxes yesterday. What a relief! I'm still having back pain. I've been in an accident where I was rearended three times now. I was a passenger each time. I was also hit from the side of my car when I was 19. Now I'm experiencing neck problems and a twitching at times on the upper bridge of my nose. I go quite often for massage and adustment.

Re: Spring cleaning/Evelyn
Hi Evelyn, I'm so happy to hear that you feel relatively well and are able to SEE to read, big improvement. Just stay away from those rearenders, I think you've had enough physical disorders for one lifetime.
Take care of yourself.Christel in Ca. who would like some snow, pretty please.
Re: Spring cleaning/Evelyn
Wish I'd had a choice about those rearenders:)
