New uses for Botox

Well, folks, it's time to face the fact that we are not the only "legitimate" users of Botox. The latest issue of _Prevention_ magazine (Jan 2003, just out this week) has an article entitled "A New Wrinkle for Botox", which includes discussion of several less familiar uses for the toxin: for migraines and fibromyalgia (we already knew about those) but also for Parkinson's disease, bladder problems like over-active bladder and incontinence, some muscular side-effects of stroke, and a couple of others.

It appears that MD's are increasingly on the lookout for new applications of the toxin, and finding them. We're not the only one any more, are we?

Ain't facts annoying? :-)

--- Lynn

I bought the prevention mag. because I saw the Botox headline, Lynn - haven't read it yet though. But at least it talks about medical uses of the substance which is a start in the right direction!

Cheers

Lynn, any idea how the botox is used for this? I thought this was an all over body thing like arthritis, so where would you put it?

I've had fibromyalgia for many years and it is all over the body, but it can be worse at different places. I am sore all over but I have tightness and pain worse in my neck, shoulders, scapula and hips. Botox has been used for years in the muscles that are in knots and painful. It has also been used in muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, stroke to relax the muscles that contract. Now it is being used for chronic pain in back & neck pain and migraines. I've received it three times for fibromyalgia in the past 2 years in my neck and sholders.

She actually feels of the muscles that lead to the knot and injects them where they are so tight. Yes it has helped.

Our newspaper had an article, a while back now, that said Botox was being used for excessive perspiration.

I was in Ladies Home Journal over a year and a half ago and they discussed the noncosmetic uses of botox including excessive sweating, back spasm, migraines, dystonia, and cerebal palsey. I have recently heard of using botox for stroke patients. Before my grandmother died, she held her hand so tight after her stroke that it would bleed and you couldn't pry it open.
