I was just a bit ticked off this morning when I read the newsmagazine from my HMO. The cover feature of the Winter issue is "Skin Care" ... including "... services to ... treat skin problems associated with ... normal aging." "Botox treatmenst, $300 per site (between the eyebrows, forehead or sides of eyes). Since this procedure requires a dermatologist ...." For some reason, this really irked me that my health insurance dollars (which are a considerable amount) can go for vanity purposes when I am denied the privilege of going to a neurologist of my choice (who is included in the physicians accepted by my HMO, but excluded in a separate contract with the clinic my PCP is associated with). I do not begrude any insurance dollars going to help with acne or other skin conditions of that nature, but once again" I do object to vanity procedures being covered! It is so obvious that the bottom line for large health clinics is the almighty dollar, no matter how they come by it. Because my eyes have been regressing since the forced change of neurologists (coincidence or not, who knows?), this really makes me boil! Sally in North Idaho who intends to write a letter to the HMO questioning their reasoning. |

SallyThat is terrible for you to have to put up with. Is your HMO a private sort of thing? I do agree - cosmetic surgery unless required following an accident or something like that should not be covered when there are many more deserving things not covered.

Funny you should mention that...my friend was taking me to a real nice shopping mall for a treat yesterday..we had a great time..bought myself a lovely cardi and some beige cord jeans...however....on the way there my eyes were resolutely shut, and she spent most of the journey saying that she really needed to get medical or surgical treatment to vanquish her crows feet...she's only early 30's and very pretty!
I just guess her priorities are different...but what makes me cross is that |I know she will get her crows feet sorted quickly and easily...grrrr.

I czn understand why you are a `bit ticked off' Sally, but go ahead and vent ALL your feelings in that letter you plan on writing. It will help calm you down and may do some good in getting the funding for botox where it is also needed - for beb. I guess all this vanity stuff is a sign of the times, but we don't have to put up with it. Good luckJune in Toronto
