Anybody know anything about the surgical procedure to relieve the pressure on the facial nerve? I met a lady that had it and is now COMPLETELY cured of her spasms and is living a perfectly normal and happy life. I live in the DFW area and I understand that Dr. Jonathan White is "The Man" in this area that can perform the operation, any feddback out there?

HFS is similar to BEB/Meige but has a different cause and effect. The cause is the collision or pressure between a major artery and the 7th cranial nerve near the top of the spine/base of the skull. The effect of HFS is usually spasms only in one eye (BEB usually affects both eyes). The treatment, which I am told is 90+% successful, is the surgical insertion of a small piece of sterile Velcro between artery and nerve, relieving the pressure.

There have been several people on this BB who have had the procedure, I believe, but when you've licked your particular demon, why stay around? Maybe someone else with more direct knowledge is still here...

I had Microvascular Decompression Surgery by Dr. Jannetta in Pittsburg. Although he wasnt't the first to do the procedure, he is the one who perfected the technique and has done over 5,000 of them last I heard. He was chosen nuerosurgeon of the year in 2000 in Austria.

I was not one of the 90% that was cured. He didn't find a nerve or vessel but something like a red thread that he cauterized. I was spasm free for 2 days. After 2 months, he told me to come back. He did some more tests and found out I had BEB and wouldn't benefit from another operation but needed a Movement Disorder Specialist.

Dr. Kassam is also in Pittsburg and trained under Dr. Jannetta. He has the same team that always works with him. They both have a reputation as being the best of the best.

MVD surgery is done behing the ear--a one by three inch opening in the skull.
