Hi Everybody Had my injections today and the Doctor told me he was trying the British version of Botox - Dysport - made by Ipsen Ltd a pharmaceutical company that specialises in botulinum products. Has anyone tried this? Is it used in the UK instead of Botox? Perhaps I am a guinea pig ! I shall monitor my reactions closely! Lyn |

I've only had Dysport...as far as I can tell it's identical to Botox...so the patient info says...same strain..it's just that over here we use different units...so your dose may be "different".
Hope it works for you...it should be cheaper than Botox..that's why the NHS uses it I think!

Dear Lyn,
I (who am mostly a lurker, but read the BB almost daily)and others I am sure would be very interested in the effects and reactions to the Dysport you were recently injected with....
I have had BEB for 5 years...I go to The Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland every 3 months to receive 100 units (8 injections around each eye) which has definitely helped to make my life tolerable again. A few months ago( I believe it was in Oct.)my neuro-ophthalmologist discussed testing of Dysport in the US. and gave me a letter to read and to consider being apart of this testing. I have not committed to do this yet and will not until I receive more information on this. As of now, I have not heard of a place or a date for this test to take place.
The letter states -" For about 10 years, a different form of botulinum toxin A, called Dysport, has been used in Europe to treat patients with blepharospam. This drug is at least as good as Botox and it may even be better (ie, longer acting, more powerful). Because of government regulations, Dysport has not been available in the US; however, the company is now being allowed to test the drug. If it passes the tests, it will be made available in the US."
From what I have read, Dysport is just about the same as Botox, only the dosages would be different.
Please let us know how you are doing.
Thank You.
Nancy/ NE. PA. Area Rep. BEBRF/ where in NE.PA. it is very very cold and we haven't seen bare ground since November....snow covered! and more snow coming.

Hi NancyThat is very interesting. I am quite excited to be having this and to see if it works any better or lasts longer.
I am sure I will be able to tell as I have been having Botox for over 13 years now. I used to have between 70-100 units and it only lasted about 11 weeks. My new doctor - actually not so new now, I have been seeing him for over a year - only gives me about 40 but he injects me in different places which seem to be much more effective as I still go 10 weeks in comfort - or as much comfort as the condition allows.
If it is the same thing exactly, I wonder why they need to have trials?
I shall take particular note of the kicking in period which usually is 1-2 weeks followed by about 8 weeks of reasonable life then a couple of weeks when it starts to wear off. I'm sure I will notice any changes and will definitely report back here to let you know.
Lyn - where it is hot and dry which doesn't help the eyes but my doctor gave me some free samples of various eye gels to try

Hi Lyn, I live in New Zealand and at our local hospital clinic, half of the patients get Botox and half get Dysport. I was told it is the British version and there's no difference. I have only had one lot of injections and I was in the Dysport group. There was some discussion on the board about Dysport some weeks/months ago. You might be able to find it by looking at back pages.

Hi ChristineDid a search of the BB under Dysport then Dysport British Botox but didn't find anything. Why do they use both in you clinic? Is it some sort of trial?

I have no idea why both are used. I suspect money / cost. Our injections are free through the hospital system here. I asked what the difference was and they said there was no difference. I don't think there is a trial, I think dysport has been used for some years? I can't ask them more questions as I have postponed further injections until I can get other health problems under control.
