Happy Fourth, everybody, especially those of you planning to attend the August 22-24 annual conference of BEBRF. The theme of this year's conference is "Visions of Freedom." What better place to meet and greet!

If you want to know more about Philadelphia, go to philly.com for a visitors' guide to historic places including the new National Constitution Center which is officially opening today. There are other related links for areas of interest.

You'll enjoy the trolley rides to tour the city. The local specialities are soft pretzels, the Philly steak sandwiches and hoagies, and of course, chocolate tasty-cakes!

Hope to see you all there!

PHILLY ROCKS!

Hi again, Geri,
Thanks for the information on Philadelphia. I'm looking forward to meeting some new folks this year from the east coast.
For those of you attending the conference, if you plan on touring the city or doing any sight-seeing while you are there, you need to come early or plan to stay over for a few days. The conference starts early afternoon on Friday and it is basically non-stop until Sunday noon. They are long but pleasant days. Much is packed into each conference and Friday and Saturday night extend to 9 and 10 pm. There are breaks throughout the day and usually a much needed longer break on Saturday afternoon late before the banquet starts. Don't worry about getting tired and your eyes closing.....everyone else is having the same problem or they are there with someone that has their eyes closed. And it is great for our spouses or relatives or friends to "see" that other people have similiar symptoms. So just bring those dark glasses and visors and "listen" when you can't get those eyes open. Mine will be open when I'm zipping around saying hi to people but believe me as soon as I sit down and the speakers start, my eyes will close. I still do want them to be open so I struggle a bit to open them and wind up not hearing what is being said.
Anyway, I got way off track....Don't plan on sight-seeing from Friday afternoon to Sunday at noon. It ain't gonna happen so make plans to go to Philly a day or so early or stay for a time after the conference.

Thanks again Geri, for the info.

Shirley in Arkansas

Hi, Jean,
Sorry I didn't get back to you right away. My husband looked at a map this morning and showed me where West Chester is. It's pretty far from where the BEBRF conference is being held. If you're planning on driving there, I would go to a Yahoo Search and type in the words "directions to West Chester, Pa from Philadelphia." I found a set of directions and sent them to my sister to see if she could e-mail you since I don't have your address.
Good luck!
If I come up with something better, I'll do a future post on directions.

Jean, Let me look into it more about the exact mileage from West Chester to Philadelphia. It would be fun to stay with a friend!
The only thing is the conference schedule is pretty tight but you could always choose the lectures/discussion groups you want to attend. Hope to see you there! I was in the teaching profession before I retired and know what it's like to cope with personal health problems and still go in to face the "kiddies" every day. It must be exhausting for you since I know what a daily struggle it is to deal with blepharospasm since I saw my own sister go through it. She had to give up her own job at the age of 53!
