Surgery is done

My myectomy surgery was done on July 1st and everything went well. The doctors and staff at the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale were wonderful and helped me to relax. The surgery began at 7:30 a.m. and I was out and on my way back to the hotel by 11 a.m. Everything was fine until right about 5p.m. when I became very sick, probably due to the anesthesia. After that things were a bit rough. My right eye began to swell in record time, reaching the size of baseball in less than a minute, and then began to bleed profusely. Not really knowing exactly what to expect this was rather alarming, Lisa called the doctor on call for the Mayo Clinic and was told this is normal and to put ice on it and it would begin to go down. But after an hour of ice, the swelling wasn't going down and the bleeding had not stopped. So we called again and they said to come to the Mayo Hospital ER and they would check it out. On the way there the left eye began to balloon up, nearly as big as the right. The doctor on call relieved some of the swelling by squeezing out the blood and fluid and we went home around 11p.m. We went in the next morning and the nurse checked me out and said I looked good and gave more instructions for taking care of the wound. The doctor made the incision low on my eyelid, near the eye lashes, and went in from there. The muscles all the way up to my brow and around the outer corners of my eyes were removed. He also removed muscle near the inner corners of my eye, near the brow and bridge of my nose. My eyes are still swollen, but I can see out of the left one occassionally if I look down or tilt my head back. My forehead is numb, but I can still feel some sort of pressure in that area. For those of you who have had the surgery, is that normal? I'm also wondering how long it took for the swelling to go down for the rest of you, so you could see somewhat normally? I'm trying to do everything they said, you know, keep it clean, apply ice, do 'normal' activities. I'm on antibiotics and they gave me pain pills but I haven't been taking the pain pills just extra strength tylenol. Lisa says I'm looking better, but it doesn't always feel like it. Will I be 'draining' for a few more weeks? I really appreciate any information you can give me. Just wanted you all to know how its going. I have pictures, but I have to wait until I go to my mother's to use the scanner. I'll keep you posted on my progress. Thanks for all the prayers. God bless -- Rolando

Rolando, glad you are doing better. The swelling is normal but I am surprized that it happened so late after the operation. I can imagine that it scared you. I remember looking like I had been in a big fight for several weeks after my operation but eventual, htings get back to normal. Hopefully, you will notice a big improvement in your condition shortly. We will keep you in our prayers...Alan

Thanks, Alan. This is Lisa. We just went for a walk. It helps him to get out of the house. He can't see, except for once in a great while. So I'm kind of wondering when he might be better able to see, even a guess-timate would be great. We've been taking pictures, but it will probably be next week before we'll be able to post them. God Bless -- Lisa & Rolando

Lisa,of course every case is different, but I would expect that within a week he should be able to see through whatever swelling is still there. I was fortunate in that I was able to see as soon as the bandages came off. Dr. Anderson had stiches my eyes shut and really packed them with ointments to try and keep the swelling down and it seemed to help. Like I said, everyone is different and in Rolando's case where the swelling came later, it will probably be a little longer. The main thing is that in the long run, I believe he will be happy that he had the operation done. We all look ugly for a month or so but it is worth it in the long run. I have had and upper and a lower one done so I can at least tell you my responses. We will keep him in our prayers. I know things will be fine. If you have any questions, please ask. If he needs to talk to someone, he can always call me or lEMail me....God Bless...Alan

I like to hear all the different reactions people have with the surgery. I know I will eventually have the surgery and its good to know what is normal and what is abnormal but has happened to other people.
Alan , did you get the upper and lower myectomies at the same time. I know I want to get the lower one too because my cheek muscles hurt so much most of the time.
Is there a site that has other peoples myectomy experienced ?
