Hi, I had my first Botox about three weeks ago. I have stopped the strong spasms but now when my eyelids close, my eye balls seem to spasm back. Has anyone else had this experience. I also tried temporary punctal plugs and they really helped so I am going to get the permanent ones. thanks for listening. Jean in NY

Jean, I am the support group leader for the San Diego area and I
just received a call a few nights ago from a patient who is having
the same experience so you are not alone. She is approximately
one month post botox--perhaps I can pose the question at the
Philly conference. Anyone else have any ideas or have experienced
this? Joanne M. San Diego, CA

In 1823, Bell published his classical finding of an upward motion of the eye during closure of the lids. He noticed that, in patients with a paralysis of the facial nerve or mechanical impediment preventing normal lid closure, attempted closure was accompanied by elevation of the uncovered eye. Subsequent studies indicated that the extent of this movement of the eyeball (when the lid attempts to close but is prevented from doing so) varies considerably from person to person. For the scientifically-minded, see: Collewijn et al. 1985. J. Neurophysiology 54: 11-27.

I quote from an e-mail I received from Dr. Daroff in November 2001:

The problem with studying eye movements in BEB is keeping the eyes open long enough to get suitable quantitative information. I have never been particularly impressed with eye movement abnormalities in BEB. SWJ is very nonspecific, and occurs in every single central nervous system disorder, particularly those involving the basal ganglia.

In summary, the eye movement abnormalities in BEB are merely a trivial
aside, and not symptomatic. You can certainly quote me on that.

SWJ = square wave jerks

My experience may or may not be exactly what you are describing. My eyeballs would roll upward with some discomfort involved. It would continue to do this and I finally would place my hands over both of my eyes and force the eyeball to close temporarily and look downward for a few seconds. This would help. The good news is after many years of trying this, the eyes stopped rolling upward and I hope it never returns. Does this sound anything like what your describing?

If you attend the International BEBRF Conference in Philadelphia PA in August, this might be a good question to ask the doctors. Hope to see you there.

Anita Croce, North Central District Director, BEBRF

Thanks Joanne, Bob and Anita. Everyday is different. Yesterday was awful, today was great. I think driving really triggers a lot of eye movement and I did not drive today. I did play golf though! I am planning on going to the conference and look forward to meeting some of you. Jean in NY
