ok, I am a 27 year old male, in pretty good health. I work out 5 days a week, and I dont think I am stressed, dont drink caffein, and get plenty of rest and sleep.

I have an issue that my left eye cant stop twitching. its not my whole eye, just my upper eye lid, it twitches. Its to the point where I close my left eye because it bothers me.

I understand I might have blepharospasm, and I will make an appointment to go to the doctor, but when I said something in the past, they said it was stress.

how is this diagnosed? what other serious problems could it be? a brain tumor or something like that? How is it treated? Thanks

Hi there and welcome to the bb. If its only your left eye affected it could be Hemi-facial spasm. Blepharospasm affects both eyes. Check out the BEBRF link at the top of the main page and read about both of these diseases/disorders. Blepharospasm is a focal Dystonia and there isn't a cure (as yet) only treatment. Hemi-Facial Spasm isn't a focal Dystonia and there is surgery available. Make sure you get yourself a good specialist to diagnose you - I'm not sure how they test for Hemi, but if it is that botox injections can help stop the twitching. Best wishes and let us know how you are doing.

Hello and welcome!

How long has your eye been closing? Many doctors will give you the line about stress. Do not accept it. Press further for answers.

You may indeed have BEB, or not. Go to a good Neuro-Op or Movement Disorder Specialist. Before going, print out all of the pages under the link BEBRF at the top of this page. Read well and take them with you to the doctor.

Knowledge is your friend and it sounds like you've been doing your homework already. Good.

Actually, I remember thinking that it may be a brain tumor too. The MRI ruled that out. Make sure that you have one to ease your own mind.

Keep asking questions.

Judy

thanks all for the replies.

In the past I have had eye twitch that has gone away by itself, but this time, the twitch is so bad, that its basically effecting and bothering me when I go out to eat, sit in a room, watch TV.

its been going on for almost 1 year. getting worse now,

my eye doesn't close, but the top eye lid twitches. I just woke up and its doing it already, so its constant.

doctors always said it was stress, but I seriously dout it at this time. I just dont know where to go where they can check for this, as most people say its common, and stress related.

I drink caffein maybe once every 4 months or so, so it cant be my intake, I get plenty of rest, at eat 8 hours a day, and drink tons of water.

Forget about the stress explanation, that isn't likely to be it. My experience with other people having eye twitching problems has been due to improperly wired fluorescent lights. When my problems first started, I worked in an office building that I would physically deteriorate as I walked towards it. Everyone told me it was stress, but it turned out to be the wiring in the building was all screwed up. There were 2 other people in the building that came to me and told me they were having problems with one or both eyes twitching once they learned I was bringing an electrician in to see what was wrong. Once we got the wiring issues straightened out, both people told me the twitching had stopped, as did my spasms.

You don't mention the twitching being any worse in one location or another or whether it varies from day to day. At the very least, I would recommend minimizing the use of fluorescent lighting, and I would recommend you buy a plug tester and make sure the outlets in your house or apartment and/or office are wired correctly. It costs less than $10 at Home Depot and other hardware stores and is simple to use. You can search online for a Gardner Bender 3-Wire Circuit Analyzer Model GRT-500A.

There are a couple other things you could try that might make a difference. Buy a copper bracelet and try wearing it on your left wrist to see if that stops the twitching (try it on the right also if it doesn't work on the left). I would also recommend buying some aluminum or copper screen and try sitting or standing on it to see if that makes a difference. You could also try grounding yourself to see if that stops the twitching. E-mail me if you want instructions on how to do that.

Even after 8 years of dealing with this, it is possible for me to have some eye twitching that I can't control for a day or two, so don't expect miracles. But these things I'm suggesting have made a difference for me at one point or another along the way and may have some benefit for you as well.
