Hi all,

Am I remembering correctly that I have read here that many of you cease taking OMega 3 capsules about a week before botox?

Appreciate any confirmation or guidance.

Robin

Hadn't hear of that, and seeing I don't drop it before injections, I'd also like to hear the pros and cons

Hello Robin, I have been getting Botox injections, 6 arount each eye, for about 4 years. Am I missing out on something? does OMega 3 capsules help Blepharospasm? I would appreciate all the help I can get.

Hi --

The Omega-3s are to help with the poor lipofilicity associated with dry eyes. Helps make your tears a bit denser so that they don;t break apart when they hit the surface of your eye. That's why many people with BEB take omega 3s or Flaxseed oil or other things od this nature.

But I could have sworn I saw somewhere that someone said they stop about a week before their injections because they can be a blood thinner and contribute to bruising. Maybe I just dreamed that?

Hi Robin,

Though I assume you know this, that stop order a week or so before injections has often been cited for aspirin and the like - any form of blood thinner, unless otherwise medically necessary - to avoid bruising etc from the injections. But on this one, like the Omega 3, I've just gone on taking them straight through.

Anyway, my next injections are Monday, so by Tuesday I'll report if I'm battered and bruised...

Cheers

Peter

I continue with supplements but this time around I'm on plavix which thins my blood and I bruise badly from little bumps.I'm stopping it 3 days before my injections because I know, I'll look beyond beat-up if I don't.

Thanks for the info on Omega 3"s. My opthamologist tells me I don't have dry eyes, but I go to a neurologist for the Botox injections.

I take extra zinc 2 weeks before and after botox injections. According to a doctor at the one and only BEBRF conference I attended (in Columbus, Ohio) it helps the botox - can't remember anymore details sorry to say. June in Toronto

Omega 3s, vitamin E, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, garlic, aspirin and any number of herbal and prescription medications such as Coumadin and Plavix all have blood thinning properties and thus can cause one to bleed/bruise a bit more when getting injections.

Most of the time it is not necessary to stop any of these things and one should certainly NOT stop a prescription blood thinning medication because they are going to be getting injections.

If you tend to bleed or bruise quite a bit from the injections, you COULD try stopping any supplemental things but I would never stop a prescribed medication or even Aspirin if your doctor has told you to take it. This question has been asked at the yearly BEBRF conferences and the physicians have all said to not stop any prescription blood thinners.

Even supplemental things....you would probably need to have stopped everything 10 days prior to your injections. Most of the time, it suffices to just let your injecting doctor know that you are taking a prescription blood thinner or letting them know that you are taking a supplement that might cause you to bleed a bit more....they can then proceed a bit more cautiously and apply more pressure if a site tends to bleed.

I wouldn't make any changes unless bleeding/bruising has been a big problem in the past and if this is the case I would discuss the problem with my doctor and let them know what you are taking. There are just so many things that can cause bleeding/bruising (even foods and herbs) that it is sometimes difficult to know what to stop.

I have tried stopping Omega 3's and not stopping them before injections and haven't been able to tell any difference. Sometimes I bleed more than other times.

Anyone else have "Noticeable" improvement with stopping Omega 3's before injections?

Side note...Omega 3's are beneficial for dry eye problems. Some people prefer flax seed oil, I prefer enteric coated fish oil. Flax is apparently difficult for the body to absorb the omega 3's and it is advised to consume "peanut butter" with it for this reason. I actually grind a Tablespoon of flax seeds in a coffee grinder every morning and combine with a Tbsp of almond meal, egg, pumpkin, cinnamon, salt and almond extract, touch of sweetener and water and then zap in the microwave for a warm cereal topped with fresh blueberries and some cream. :-)

I take Omega - 3s, Vit E, selenium, zinc etc. etc. I've had bruising twice after injections. I told my neurologist I hadn't taken any aspirins before injections in case of bleeding and his reply was "Who told you that? Aspirins can prevent strokes so don't worry about that unless your having brain surgery" He said the dentist may not like it as it slows up his work ". I think I get hyper vigilant and paranoid about all these things and need guidance and education and a need to be set straight in my thinking at these times. So back to the BEB Education Board with the ones who know. Betty

My brother is getting ready for cancer surgery and the doc told him to stop the Plavix seven days before surgery. He also told him to stop the fish oil because it is a blood thinner also. The oncologist suggested that my brother speak with his cardiac doctor before continuing the fish oil after surgery.

A couple of years ago, I asked my doctor about that long list-- Omega 3, Vit. E, tea-tree oil (I think I remember seeing that too), aspirin, etc. He said just stop aspirin if you are taking it, a day or two before botox. But I had always forgotten about stopping the other things-- I have had bruising a few times, which has gone away in a couple of days, and my impression was that the severity didn't seem to have any connection with supplements. But maybe there are some people who are supersensitive.

Thanks, everyone. My shots are next Wednesday and I'll keep taking the supplements and see if there's any difference.

You are right. I think the important thing is to keep your Doctor informed of everything you take. We always have to fill out such a form before surgery, and for my file for the dentist and inform of any changes. Betty
