My neuro thinks this will help my eyes to be able to open better when the Botox is working. Although it won't stop spasms, she feels that getting rid of the excess eyelid skin will improve my ability to fully open my eyes. Has anyone been given this advice, had this surgery with any success noted? She says since it does not involve removal of any muscles, it is a relatively simple procedure that may be worth trying. I am surgery phobic with a very high deductible so I'd like to hear some success stories before I make the decision... Andrea

I had blepharoplasty 18 months ago, I had it on one eye along with myectomy surgery. The eye looks a lot better and I no longer get ptosis after botox, but, I have constant dry eye problems because the eyelid doesn't close properly even after further minor surgery. |

My Husband who has BEB and Appraxia has been advised to have the Levator tightening, not sure yet if they would remove any excess skin, we are just discussing surgery. But they feel this would help him to open his eyes wider when they do open. "this would not help the spasms, but would make it easier to open his eyes "

Andrea
I had my blepharoplasty surgery done in 2006 by Dr. John Shore in Austin. My eyelids were opener half way and it was a wonderful difference. It made me feel much better by just changing my appearance and people not asking if I was going asleep. I was awake and it did not take long. Don't be afraid...if I can do you can do it. Zoe |

It seems to be quite hard to distinguish between different forms of surgery for blepherospasm. I had what my surgeon, a cosmetic surgeon actually, called a blepheroplasty but it seems like muscle was removed as well as excess skin. Whatever, it did make a substantial difference and the botox worked better afterwards. I was left with one slightly crooked upper eyelid which didn't close properly. I had this corrected, 10 years later, just a couple of months ago. It appeared that in the original operation the stitches were probably removed too early and the eyelid had collapsed into the wound and it all healed very slowly as a mass of scar tissue. The latest operation has restored the eyelid, with a skin graft from the other eyelid. It seems to be working pretty well. I don't need gel at night any more and my eyes seem to work better. We were careful to leave plenty of time before taking out the stitches this time. Havn't had botox again yet - probably in feb. |

Andrea, I had Blepharoplasty plus Ptosis Repair at the end of October. There was no illusion that it would cure my Blepharospasm, but it did make a difference. I no longer look out and see the underside of my eyelids. I'm still within the 90-day post-op period, so my insurance carrier will not cover Botox until the end of the 90 days. Thus, I can't yet report how the eyes will do on Botox having had the surgery. The only side-effect is that my left eye doesn't quite close completely. But that's not a show-stopper. Good luck.

Hi Andrea, In answer to your question, it was suggested to me by my movement disorder neurologist (who gives me the botox injections) that if I had a blepharoplasty it might make the botox work better also. Not a cure just a help. I beleive a major part of my problem is apraxia. I went to an ocularplasty surgeon who he referred me to. She said I needed a levator muscle tightening as well on one side with the blepharoplasty on both. She did say she'd take some muscle also but we never got into it because she sent me for a visual field test which I proved I needed the blepharoplasty for insurance purposes. But when I went back to her we discussed the severe dry eyes I have and she said she was concerned the surgery would give me more discomfort with the dry eye and cause further irreversible problems. So at this point I'm not going to do anything until the ptosis becomes worse and then she'll operate. As much as I'd like the eyelift I'm concerned about the dry eye. I'm on restasis for about 5 weeks now and will be able to tell how that is working once I get the botox the beginning of February. The dry eye I've gotten last two times has been like someone has poured acid into my eyes. It's horrible. I've meet people who have the blepharoplasty surgery and are very happy they did it. Hope this helps and good luck with your decision

Hi, Andrea. I am now two and a half weeks from blepharoplasty surgery with Dr. Shore. I just had botox injections a few days ago. My eyes are definitely better than before........When I do have spasms the eyes do not close as much, just sort of a squint and feel "tighter". He only removed skin, no tightening of muscles. And I definitely look better cosmetically. And it was not a bad procedure at all. The only discomfort for me was the swelling post op. No real pain, just discomfort from swelling and that was nothing compared to botox injections. The only pain I felt was the injections to numb the eye area. And not as bad as Botox. I was wide awake the whole time. And to show you that it was not too bad, my husband had the same surgery one week later. He has needed the surgery for years. His upper eye lids really did obstruct his vision with a "hooded" effect. He had met his deductible so after my experience, he decided to go ahead and have it done. He hates going to the dr.!! I had 80 units of Botox this time. I am better, but still have some problems. It's only been 4 days since last injections. How are you doing after your first set of botox injections with new dr? Incidentally, my BCBS insurance denied coverage for blepharoplasty the first time. I then got a letter/second opinion from neurologist and appealed the first decision. Had approval right away. My next plan if denied was to file complaint with state board of insurance. Insurance companies hate it when that happens and sit up and pay attention to you. Thankfully that was not necessary. Let me know how you are doing. Modified by Bethann at Sun, Dec 21, 2008, 17:08:58 |

She gave me 100 units, which included the lash line injections in the pretarsal ... she injected a variation of what the last doctor had done. So far ... 10 days ... definintely improvement over end of last cycle where I went 14 weeks and was having a very hard time holding my eyes open ... I am at least back to functioning ... not normal by any means, but able to get to work at least ... I am definitely finding it easier to be a hermit, as I can maneuver in my own home. Finding the commotion of being out and about or socializing for any length to be a real challenge. She recommended Dr. Shore, but as he is not on my insurance, I will return to Dr. Buckingham for consultation on the Blepharoplasty. Happy Holidays to All and thanksfor all your input. Andrea |
