FYI: Tinting Cocoons

A patient has sent the following message to me regarding Christy Optical, who used to tint the Cocoons with FL41 in Houston...

"The polarized lenses on the Cocoons have been changed and can no longer be tinted without destroying them? He said he has checked everywhere and can not find any of the old material. So the glasses cannot be replaced."

I know that some of you had gotten them from him so take very good care of them.

Hi Nilda,
I am not familiar with Cocoons but is it possible to remove the lenses and have new ones made for the frames? That is what I did with a pair of Bolle' Sunglasses with 70% FL-41 tint.

Norm,
Cocoons are wraparound fitover glasses with polarized lenses. Many of us have them. The problem is getting polarized lenses that will accept FL41 without being destroyed. I assume the lenses you had tinted with FL41 were not polarized.

Christy Optical and the manufacturers of Cocoons are looking to see if there is a solution to the problem. In the meantim,e he makes the same recommendation as I to those who have them already. Take good care of the ones you currently have.

NIlda,
I was just curious about the lenses being taken out and changed. I don't have cocoons.
The lenses I had made for my new frames are polarized, have anti scratch and antiglare coating so they can't be changed but if need be I can have new lenses made.
thanks for the info.

Norm,

The lenses are removed from the Cocoons and dyed with the FL-41 tint and then put back into the Cocoon frames. Charlie with Christy Optical told me that he can dye polarized lense material and cut it to fit Cocoon frames. His problem is that someone has changed something in the manufacturing process with Cocoon lenses and they will no longer accept FL-41 dye. He has tried polarized material from other manufacturers to no avail. If you have a source for polarized lenses that will accept FL-41 dye, let me know and I will get that info to Charlie as he is actively looking for such a product as he makes a lot of these lenses for BEB patients. I cannot drive without mine and I only have one pair. Thanks.

Anyone tried getting the Fitover brand FL41-ed? I suspect that if Cocoons become unfixable Fitovers might be an alternative - they are polarized, but I wear mine over FL41 glasses so don't know about tinting them.

Peter,

Thanks for the info. I will let Charlie know about Fitovers so he can see if he can dye them.

Thanks for the warning!
I will try to take extra care of the FL41 cocoons I got from Charlie at Christy Optical last year.
I will be going to Baylor to get botoxed in a couple of weeks, was going to drop by Christy anyway, and will ask about all this...

Judith,
How did your appointment in Houston at Baylor go? Was Charlie able to give you an update on the FL41 tint. I was the one he told I probably got the last pair he could make. I will buy another pair if he can get the material.
What did your dr. say and which one do you use. I use Dr. Ondo.
I think you are the one I met at the Austin Support Group Meeting?? Right?
