After 7 weeks, my left eye has only recovered about 50% from the drooping caused by the Botox injection. How long does this typically last? This was my first set of shots.
Second, I am getting a feeling of grit in the lower right side of my right eye that has been increasing over the last 3 weeks. I have to pull my lower eyelid away from the eyeball to get relief. Is this coming from the Botox also? |

Alan....I am not an expert on botox, and have only had a very minor drooping of one eyelid one time in 9 years of botox, so I cannot address that.
I have had gritty feelings in my eyes, and do not believe it is the botox. I have dry eyes, and use a good, heavy eyedrop 4-6 times per day. Walmart has an equate brand that is pretty good-not watery, but with more viscosity. At night, I put in Genteal gel, and this seems to be working for me-my gritty feeling days are few and far between. Good luck Steve |

The gritty feeling is the dry eyes which can be ascerbated by the Botox for me. Just find a good eye drop and use it religiously. I find Refresh Celluvisc, which comes in non-preservative vials, has worked best for me. It is expensive. I would also suggest that you ask you doc for eye drop samples and try several for several days to help you see what works. |

Most people only have drooping for about 3 weeks. Mine lasted for 5 weeks last time. I only had drooping 2x in 2 and a half years. Judy |

This was your first round of botox, so be sure to tell your doctor about the ptosis--the drooping--and how long it lasted. Sometimes ptosis has to do with the injection being placed too near the middle of the upper eyelid.
I've had a little drooping maybe 4 times in 4 1/2 years. The first time, it lasted several weeks, then cleared up. The other times, the droopiness stopped after a few days or a week. I'm also wondering whether it's lasting so long for you because it is the first time. Though for me, the first time I went to my current neurologist, a resident did the injections under his supervision. She was slow and uncertain, it was the only time I had any significant hurting from the injections; after that, I requested that only my neurologist himself do the injecting. He is very experienced and, so far, I've had very few side effects, and if I have them, they clear up pretty quickly. (Except for watery eyes, which happened once, and lasted maybe a month. That resulted in an injection site adjustment.) It may just be a question of a simple adjustment of one injection site. Judith K |

Hi Alan, Ptosis varies with injection technique, location, and the person being injected's propensity for it. So, as usual with BEB, results vary greatly. I still had visible ptosis at day 81 after injections in December. I then had injections in different locations at the end of February, with no ptosis, but I did get double vision. Double vision, like ptosis, results from the toxin leaking (or accidentally being injected into) unintended layers of muscle. Hence my theory that I seem to be more porous than most folks. After only one round of injections, it would be premature to say whether you are porous or just had bad injection technique/locations. What to do about it? Several tricks I've learned about. First, if you are stuck with ptosis, ask the doctor to prescribe Iopidine drops. These somehow stimulate some thing in the eyelid and cause them to raise themselves a bit. Definitely a help, though not perfect. Second, if you get good spasm control but are stuck with ptosis every time (too soon to say this for you though), you could think of getting ptosis crutch glasses. They definitely help and for me are far better than taping up the eyelid. Third, to prevent it in the first place, the amount injected into the eyelids needs adjusting downwards. Shots more to the side, and stronger doses away from the lids, with less in the lids, is one approach. Fourth, leakage of toxin into adjacent areas is reduced if the volume of toxin injected is decreased. The issue here is that the volume is determined not by the strength of the dose, but by the dilution of the Botox (Botox itself has to be mixed in saline or some such fluid to make it injectable). By diluting it less, the injected volume is reduced. It has taken me six years (!) to get to the right mix of strength, locations etc to avoid ptosis and get adequate spasm relief. I hope that by passing on what I've learned you and others can get there a little more rapidly! Cheers Peter PS, re dry eye, I always go through a passage of around a week of much worse dry eye during the first couple of weeks of Botox. After that, it eases off, back to my "normal" dry eye. You may be having the same thing, only later in the Botox cycle. Modified by pdb at Wed, Apr 15, 2009, 17:42:43 |

Peter,
I don't think you meant Iodine. I think that could blind you. I belive you meant iopodine, an eye pressure medication sometimes prescribed for ptosis. Nilda |

Yikes. I'd swear I typed Iopidine, but then the auto spelling fixer might have leapt into action. Original now fixed. Iopidine I like, Iodine, not so much. Sorry about that. Peter |

Now I'm curious! iopodine, lopodine, povidone-iodine before eye surgery. I give up! What is it? (:>) Betty Modified by Betty Blink at Wed, Apr 15, 2009, 17:36:23 |

IOPIDINE. This is an off-label use of eye drops used to reduce pressure in the eye before surgery. The use for lifting droopy lids is the 0.5% version. Stronger is used pre-op apparently. Cheers Peter |

Peter: Thanks! Now my 3rd day after Botox and have slight Ptosis Left eye this time. Will ask about it. I think I'm getting more porous with age and thin skinned. Betty |

I also have droopy eyelids once in a while, it lasts about 3 weeks. Just mention it to my Doc next time and he adjusts the dosage of BX. Also have some irritation in my lower right eye after getting injections. My optho insisted I did not have dry eyes, but he finally (after many complaints) prescribed erythimycin. Works great and I only use it a couple of weeks after injections. |

Alan, As has been stated, the grittiness is a classic dry eye effect. A very good help is to use 'Lacrilube' gel at night. A small tube is sold over the counter in the eye department of most stores. Though the tube is fairly small, it lasts quite a while. Take care, Judy |

Thanks for all your PROMPT advice and counsel. This morning I'm off to the drug store to find what has been recommended.

I found generic lubricating eye drops in individual capsules and ointment in a Walgreen brand, and have found them to help the dry eye gritty feeling a lot. Thanks for all your input.
