Hi,
I am a 34-year-old mother of two who started experiencing an eye twitch in February of this year. Having had a new baby in December (and therefore having very little sleep) every time I brought this up to my doctor she said it was linked to the lack of sleep. My twitch is on the lower lid, close to my nose. It was nonstop (although it would sometimes be less visible or fast). In October, it stopped for about 3 weeks... I was so happy! It was the first time that I didn't feel that and I just thought it was gone forever! It came back after 3 weeks (I really can't see if something happened that was different or if it just came back)... and today (about a month after it started again), I've noticed a very faint twitch in the inner part of my eyebrow (same side)... I am very nervous... I am afraid of what I will look like, if it is something that could be triggered by a tumor, etc... I need your help guys! I am starting work next week and I am embarrassed by that twitch and want to know how I can make it stop... At first I was thinking Blepharospasm but now with my eyebrow involved, I am wondering if it could be something more serious... I've added a picture to show where the twitches are: ![]() |

Hi, Sorry to have to 'meet' you like this! Very clever of you to include a picture with your post. If I were you, I'd make an appointment with a neurologist who has treated blepharospasm, or with a movement disorder specialist, and see what he/she has to say. Maybe you might also get your husband or someone else to videotape you when the twitches are happening, in case they suddenly get well-behaved just when you go to the doctor; you wouldn't be the first this has happened to! I don't think at this point you can be sure what it is. It can still be dystonia. Or maybe in part it does have to do with a lack of sleep, or stress, those kinds of things. Was any anesthesia used in your delivery? If so, I would suggest you find out what kind it was, as the onset of this twitch occurred not long after you had the baby. Did you have any other drugs for the delivery? Where are you? How did you come to consider that it might be blepharospasm, did your doctor bring this up and then dismiss it? Sounds as if you've done some research! Judith K |

Thanks for your quick response :-)
I have hypochondria tentancy so of course, I have done LOTS of research and trying not to freak out too much! I had my baby in December of last year and they didn't use any drugs... I started the twitching in Februaray, a good month and a half after at least. When I firt brought it up to my doctor as an "eye twitch" she blamed the lack of sleep... I also drink LOTS of coffee... well over the last 10 months, I have tried cutting down on coffee, using my eye glasses more (I work on computers a lot and didn't use them as much as I have should), and tried to sleep as much as I could with two baby boys in the house. It didn't make any change, it was twitching (to varying degree) every day, every hour, every minute... Every time I brought it up to my doctor she would say lack of sleep, being tired, etc... Today I've noticed the eyebrow twithc, it is extremely subtle but my husband was able to notice it and I can totally "feel" it... so that got me freaked out a little. I mean, an eye twitch because of lack of sleep, I can believe, but eyebrow? I was really happy when it completely stopped for a couple of weeks and keep telling myself that since it did stop, it can't be something major (like a tumor or something)... but it still freaks me out (did I mention my hypochondria??? loll) No one has diagnosed me with anything yet other than "a tired mommy" but I am pretty sure based on the signs that it has more to do with nerves and muscles than lack of sleep... PS I am in Canada (New Brunswick) |

Hi Val,
Please forward through with Judith's suggestions. I saw 7 doctors before I was diagnosed with BEB, but I did know what it was at that time from my research. I truly believe a neurologist or movement disorder specialist would be a smart move. Keep a journal of this so you have valid data to back you up. Our memories are not the best when we are stressed over these discomforts. Zoe in Kyle, TX |

Hello and Welcome, 1. You are not imagining the symptoms. 2. Your doctor does not know why you are spasming. See a specialist. 3. You sound very knowledgeable and intelligent. 4. Two little boys! How old are they? Don't figure on getting a lot of sleep for a while (I'd guess about 18 yrs, just kidding!). Mother of two grown daughters here. 5. Are you working outside the home. (LOL)remembering and glad I'm not going there again. Judy |
