Dear Friends,
I have cervical dystonia, mostly in my neck and shoulder, but lately have been noticing that there is a twitch going on under my eye. I don't feel like I need to blink, but am a little worried about this being the beginnings of blepharospasms. Do I need to be concerned? Thank you. Chelle |

From my 12 years of experience, it is relatively rare for someone with cervical dystonia to develop blepharospasm later, but it's not unheard of. I've also read of many people who complained about a twitch in the eye that went away after a week or two, so it isn't time yet to be concerned. If the twitch is not constant, i.e. it only happens at certain times in certain places, look for fluorescent lighting as a possible cause of the twitching. I worked in an office building where the lights were poorly wired, and 2 other employees in the building confided in me that they were having trouble with eye twitching. Once we got an electrician in to fix several issues we discovered, my problems decreased and their twitching stopped. So beware the fluorescents! TomSpasm |

Hi Chelle, Sometimes a twitch or tic is just that and nothing more. Many folks with or without a dystonia will develop twitches or tics that will last for varying amounts of time. Sometimes they last for a day or so and sometimes they can go on for months and then just disappear. They are often stress related. I understand your concern but I wouldn't worry about it too much at this point. It will either progress or not...not a whole lot that you can do about it. Have you started any new medications that might be causing this as a side-effect? Shirley in New Mexico |

Hi, Chelle-
Hopefully, the eye twitch goes away and that is it. Many people do experience eye twitches at some point in their life, and it doesn't mean that they will develop blepharospasm. With your history, I know it does make you wonder. We will all hope for the best, and if you find that you have any symptoms that are related to blepharospasm (photophobia, difficulty keeping your eyes open), then you know that we are here for you! Take care. |
