I was looking online and stumbled onto some news. Allergan recently received a patent for what they claim is a new treatment for blepharospasm. I'm not sure if this was common knowledge or not. I'm not sure how different from restasis this new drug is since they seem to share ingredients. You can check out the reading in the address below.

Wow! Could somebody translate the attachment into regular English? I understood about 10% of it. How would you know that your BEB was caused by dry eye or vise versa? No more botox? Sounds fabulous! Klara in Central Texas

I read most of the article that I could. Cyclosporine is used to treat auto immune diseases and cyclosporine eye drops are known as Restasis. they said their drops cured one symptom of BEB.? I found this web site - see link. It said cyclosporine was used to decrease swelling and inflammation of the eye and encourage flow from the tear ducts. Perhaps someone else can say it better or clarify it better. Marion

Great piece of detective worki there.

"improvement in at least one symptom of blepharospasm" is claimed, but no detail of what aspect is changed or improved. Sounds like a prelude to a new product from Allergan. Nothing here to suggest whether it's a little helpful, very helpful or what.

As a wild guess I wonder if they noticed changes in blepharospasm patients when treated with REstasis after the dry eye problems had been resolved?

All new things helpful are good news.

I guess I should have looked before I leaped. I just googled cyclosporin and found out it is actually the Restasis drops. I have taken those for about 3 years and is hasn't done anything for the spasms or blinking or glare. I do think it helps the dryness in my eyes. Well, I hope all new things are good news, but I can't help from being disappointed.

i am consistent with retasis since sept 09. i also started amitypline dec09 and believe i started with dry eye fatigue an stress march 09. i am doing better and last bout of botox has been best result. i also continue with lorazapan but much lower dose after last botox. same injecter since sept09 but last two times have been at 75 total. so it is hard for me to tell what is helping or if it is the combination. what has improved for me is the apraxia. but i also saw this improvement start with ptosis crutches. oh well....kimm

Restasis has not been as successful as they had hoped. Many quit using it because they get burning and stinging in the eyes and can't seem to get beyond that.

It is a miracle in the vet world. My kitty takes Cyclosporine pills for a horrible skin condition that was endangering his life. It really saved him. I have tried to wean him off it several times (it is very expensive) but he starts scratching again, so he will probably take it for the rest of his life.

It is possible that Cyclosporine will work for eye inflammation if they can get a better way of getting the drug to the eye through some other form other than eye drops.

i was told the burning would be when my eyes were dry. after long term use it no longer burns as my dry eye has resolved. this was helpful for me to know because i would have quit early on due to the discomfort. i used an otc drop before and after to help with stinging.kimm

I give hope to anything new but...

I haven't used restasis for a couple of year because it didn't seem to help and was expensive. My last 30day supply was over $150.

So I'm wondering if they are increasing the amount of cyclosporine in the carrier agent. If that is the case, is it going to be as expensive as botox? We ARE dealing with Allergan. I am thankful for for them inventing Botox and if this works maybe it will help others that botox doesn't seem to help.

Have a good weekend all,
Norm

Nothing new yet, it appears.

I just came from support group meeting, Allergan rep was there, it seems to be the same cyclosporine right now that's in the Restasis.

I use Restasis and don't need as many regular drops. Have been on these just after spasms started. Only once per day as I woke up to fuzzy vision, thought the house was on fire. Woke hubby to see if I was trippin. I was and just use them in the morning. Suz

Restasis used After Cataract Surgery

I had my yearly eye test yesterday with a new doctor taking over for mine who is on maternity leave. We talked BEB/eye drops, etc. etc. She mentioned Restasis is being used for after-care with cataract surgery. I've heard of so many bad reports on how this moisturiser stings a lot I wonder how people manage?
