I have read on the board that patients wash there eyes with Tea Tree Oil. I went to the Health Food Store to buy some and it said on the label not to get it in the eyes. Am I looking at the right stuff? If so How is it used?. Thank You |

Hi Marion, I used FIND re tea tree oil. the following are only parts of the posts (you answered to one of them) - hope they help. June in Toronto
-------------- "Tea tree oil should never be used full strength. I can't use tea tree oil shampoo on my eyelids right after my injections because I can't close my eyes tight enough to keep it from burning my eyes. About a month after my injections, I start using the tea tree oil shampoo for eyelid scrubs and stop using it when I get my next set of injections. It seem to help my blepharitis. Betty Blink replied: "They must be putting tea tree oil in everything now as I have it in a cleaner, in nailpolish and now it seems they're using it's antiseptic qualities in eyewash. ------------------- lightwave posted back: "We have found that tea tree oil is good but should never be used full strength. When it is used in shampoos, etc., it is a very small percentage of the total product. Personally, I think it seems to build up in my system and I take a break from it every so often." ----------------------- Grant posted 02/12/10 "put on hot wheat bags twice a day and scrub with tea tree oil shampoo diluted to help with the blepharitis"

Do not use Tea Tree Oil on or around your eyes! That label is there for a reason. Some time back....there was an article in the BEBRF newsletter where a physician explained usage "in his office" of tea tree oil for killing mites that sometimes become a problem on the eyelids. This application of pure tea tree oil on the lids should only be done in a doctors office and by the physician for specific reasons. Even then, it is probably going to burn like..... There has been the occasional mention on this board of using a very mild tea tree oil "shampoo" on the lids for various reasons. I'd be VERY careful in doing this as the various shampoos are not meant to be used in or around the eyes and could cause extreme burning and or irritation. I have used a tea tree oil shampoo (Paul Mitchell) to wash my HAIR with. When my eyes aren't closing well (like most of the time), I have to be very careful NOT to get any in my eyes as it really burns. At least one other person has mentioned that her tea tree oil shampoo did not burn or irritate her eyes. If you need an eye cleanser/soap, I would stick with any of the baby shampoos or a product made "specifically" for the eyes like OcuSoft eye cleanser. Think very mild products. Is there a specific problem that you wanted to use the Tea Tree Oil for or did you just need an eye cleanser? Blepharitis? Dry eye? Shirley in New Mexico

Shirley, You are correct. Tea tree oil should never be used directly on the eyelids. When I went to the dry eye specialist who treated me for blepharitis, he only used 50% tea tree oil and did the scrubs with q-tips. He also used anesthetic drops because it was very painful. He warned me to never use the oil directly on my lashes without diluting it in shampoo. He then told me to add a few drops of tea tree oil to baby shampoo (never more than 10% tea tree oil to 90% shampoo. He also said I could get the shampoo on the internet if I didn't want to mix it. He did not specify a brand. When you do the scrubs, you want to keep your eyes tightly closed because it can be irritating. I can't do the scrubs right after Botox because I can't close my lids tight enough. It is very effective at treating blepharitis (which is usually caused by an overabundance of the tiny arachnids that feed on the gunk and oil at the root of your eyelashes). I have oily skin, so I must be particularly yummy to these little creatures. Glynda in Houston, TX |

Glynda, thanks for the further feedback on the use of tea tree oil. I appreciate you relating your personal experience with the tea tree oil and why it was used. I absolutely cringed when I saw that article in the newsletter as I was wondering how many folks were just going to skim the article and then go out and try it themselves. Sometimes a little bit of information can be dangerous. It was a good article and is a legitimate treatment option for the mites when they are an issue...it just isn't something that someone should try at home or without guidance from their eye doctor (like you were doing). Thanks, Shirley in the high desert in New Mexico with 9 inches of snow a few days ago and 60 degrees today. |

Thank you all for answering my question. I thought if it would help my eyes feel better I'd try it but now I think I will leave it on the shelf. Thanks to all. |

I use Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser, they have a cream also, in the summer I rub it in before I get in the shower to help with extra oil and chlorine. I swim 3 or 4 times a day weather permitting and I live in Vegas so winter is short. I do have to ust the pool heater some as anything below 90 degree water is detramental. BION tears as needed throught the day and Restasis in the morning. During Bells Palsey and after Botox injections I used Refresh Night time care, it is a salve in a small tube and I didn't wake up with my eye crusted shut. Suz |

I don't know if it is relevant but citris or tomatoes make my eyes water. Spagetti sauce is my eyes best friend and with two kids everyone is happy! Blessed Be, Suz |
