Stronger sunglasses for relieving photophobia

Greetings!

Normal sunglasses are tinted to block 70-90% of visible light. But this isn't good enough; the light is too strong. What I was looking was models that have stronger tinting, let's say 95% + and models that would allow rx insert (for correcting myopia).

I was able to find rudy project hi altitude models (95%) and adidas space lens (95%). Both are available with rx. BUT! even rudy project isn't so dark as one would imagine... so i went looking for something stronger. I've found this site - http://www.noir-medical.com/ that has some really cool models (even with rx and 99% tinting).

Is anyone familiar with noir products (or similar companies) or have even tried the 99% model?

Thanks for replying.

Best regards;
Tom

Tom,
I would be interested if you get a pair and let us know how they are. I looked into many sunglasses. I have 3 pair of FL-41 and the best I have found was some safety glasses that blocks out more blue light. I was interested in the different darknesses and the different color tint.

Thanks for he link,
Norm

Norm,

Some time ago, I was looking for a darker tint and more blue blocking. The blue light is the part of the visible spectrum that gives us trouble. I made the mistake of buying sunglasses with 100% blue blocking. When driving with the sunglasses on, I could see the red on traffic signals but could not see the yellow and green lights. Fortunately, the sunglasses company was nice enough to exchange them for a pair that had a little less blue blocking.

I have been working with the Department of Rehabilitation and the Lion's Center for the Blind. I was given a glare evaluation which consisted of trying a lot of different colored lens. They were shades of red, purple, different greys, amber and black. I did the test in bright sunlight.
The colors that worked for me were the reds, amber and purple. I settled on the darker amber because the lens could be polarized.

For several year I wore dark grey/black snowboard glasses and they worked well but the new ones are great.
I was surprised there were so many len colors.

thanks for sharing your unique experience of working with rehab dept & lion's ctr. glare evaluation is something i've not seen referenced before or experienced as a diagnostic. i tried on a fellow beb patient's fl-41's(?)at a support group mtg. i think the tint was purple or red. like you, i wore grey polarized sunglasses successfully, but have settled on drug store bought wrap-arounds, or whatever you call the ones ones that fit over your regular glasses, in amber, actually their brand is "as adveristed on tv" (lol) & i like them the best. & cheap. maybe 20 bucks, tops.
