FL 41 new thread/more questions

I've been away from the computer for a few days, and read with interest all the commments on FL 41 tinting. Most seemed to focus on orange vs. pink and where to get the job done. So I have some other questions I'd like answered:

1. Peter and a few others have talked about percentages. (35%, 75% etc.) How many percentages are there and how and where are they used? Which leads me to the next question:

2. When/where does one wear FL 41 tinted glasses? All the time? Outdoors? Indoors? I have never needed glasses indoors (except for drugstore readers). Is it recommended that I get an indoor Rx (or non-Rx) pair, have them tinted and wear them around the house all the time?

3. I note that some of you get FL 41 tinting on Cocoons or over goggles. Aren't those already tinted with dark sunblock? What is the procedure there? Does the lab tint OVER that or remove the sun shield and replace with FL41?

I absolutely will not go outside (since I live in Florida) without two sets of glasses on. That's a given. But I'm wondering about other times. I did go to the theatre last week and found that a pair of lightly tinted (brown) sunglasses (non Fl 41) helped to mute the intense stage lights. (Many of the modern theatrical productions use strobe effects during dance numbers etc. and it's hell on a blepharo.)

One other question - there was a lot of talk on the other thread about plastic. Can I take some of my old glass glasses (the prescription is still valid) and use them? Or does the FL41 tinting have to be done on plastic? Can one go to a place like Costco, get an inexpensive pair and then send them on to Utah?

Thanks for all your help. It was nice to get away but I missed you guys.

Marcia

Hi there!

I'll respond to some of your questions in no particular order~

I know it isn't this way for everyone, and it's different from within the year I first began getting botox (about 6 years ago); now, the way I use FL41s, is often on an 'as needed' basis.

There have been times when I've been extremely photosensitive—and when that happens I wear them outdoors, especially for driving. Also, I may wear the lesser tint for watching TV, movies, things like that (but also sometimes outside, too; depends on how bright the light is).
I don't wear them all that much indoors, certainly not constantly. (For one thing, I hardly ever watch TV!) I mean, days and sometimes weeks go by, and I don't watch anything.
If I go to a movie, I sit so that I'm looking downwards (I try to do the same with a TV screen—).
In a theater (movie theater, or an auditorium where something else is going on), I've found that if there are very bright spotlights or halogen lights near or around the stage, I'll wander around until I find a place where the lights are mostly concealed. Usually I can do that. Sometimes, sitting really close gets the lights behind you. I experiment, so often go early and, if possible, get in early so I can look for a good seat.

I'm very glad to have FL41s, but when I wear them really depends on my eyes. Depends on conditions of light, and whether my eyes are behaving, or whether I simply feel like wearing them 'just in case'.

I do mostly wear them for driving, however. (And remember, even on a cloudy day, the glare can be considerable.)

These days (used to be different) I don't really 'need' to wear them indoors a lot of the time, but I like to wear the light-tinted reading glasses, especially when I read at night, because they're soothing. And otherwise, if they feel especially soothing. (Also, my optometrist suggested wearing reading glasses rather than progressives if I was going to read for any length of time, because I get the whole lens as a reading area, not just a crescent at the bottom. I hadn't been particularly careful about this before.)

It says on the Moran site that glass lenses cannot be tinted (I posted the FL41 excerpt yesterday), but still it might not hurt to ask them again.
The excerpt says the plastic (gives a particular formula) is most successful, but polycarbonate, while more difficult, is still usually possible. (I just had already-made pairs of plastic and polycarbonate glasses tinted by Moran last month, and I am happy with the results. The poly did come out a little darker. But I'm OK with that. I had a pair of polycarbonates done also in 2005, and those were fine.)

Missed you too!

Judith K
PS This time,
I handed in my cocoon frames. The lenses were replaced by plain ones that had been tinted. The original ones were not used. (Anyway, that's what I understood was to happen.)

Thank you! Two more questions - you say you "handed in" your cocoon frames. Can I assume that Moran replaced the lenses? And then tinted them?

What did that cost? I paid $40 for my cocoons already.

Appreciate your lengthy responses - I've learned a lot from them.

Hi,

Less lenghty response!:

The tint is $35 (same as it was for the first ones I had done in 2005).

"Handed in": Moran had a table set up at the SLC conference. I left 3 pair with them with instructions as to what kind of tint I wanted.
I should double check with them. I THINK they replaced the lenses on the cocoons—that's what I assumed would be done—but maybe I'm wrong.

Hi,

I recalled correctly, the Cocoon lenses were replaced. Because 'they do not allow us to re-tint them.'

Patrick also said that when they go very dark (as I requested), it's not uncommon that the lenses take on a slightly different hue (I think I mentioned mine were deep rose, but had a hint of brown in them).

I'll post this also separately.

I have 3 pair of the fit-over FL-41 sunglasses. I have 1 pair at 75% with Polaroid lenses to use in bright sun like at the beach and in the winter to cross county ski. I then have what I call my medium pair also 75% but without the polaroid lens for less extreme days and a pair of 35 or 40% for shopping to protect from the flourescent light issue, for cloudy days or indoors on a sunny when my eyes are very photosensitive especially first thing in the morning from sleeping to bright sun. The Moran eye center will return the tinted lenses that come with the cocoons, they also will add or remove some tint if you find a selection too much or too little.
I also find that a hat, its really ugly but it it shields not only my forehead but the sides of my face and makes a huge diffence in bright sun. Its a sunhat I found at a regular store with a 4 inch brim all the way around. Baseball caps and sun visors do not help me, they are too limited in their protection.

Thank you. Very helpful. I've been trying to play tennis these days and, unless a cloud cover comes along, it's very hard.

1. Pick any number from 1 to 100 - extremes will not be useful though.
2. Anywhere that they are helpful/anywhere that you feel impacted by bright light/glare
3. As per Judith's answer
4. Trying them on a cheap pair (old or new cheap) is a good idea - assuming you think the maker of the cheap glasses gives you a pair that are properly made for your prescription. so you can try mail order and take your chances, or try Costco etc etc.

Cheers
