I had a procedure done to my right eye the dr. referred to it as a macular hole
after the surgery about one and a half years my right eyelid started to droop at that time i had asked the surgeon about it he said that plastic surgery could fix it. It was then my blinking became more frequent ,and i blamed it on the drooping eye ,it was as if i was trying to clear my eye as you would if you had dust in it, at that point i had never heard of BEB and the Dr assured it was just a tic that i had picked up from my blinking. as the blinking got worse the Dr sent me on to a specialist you then said i had developed BEB but really my drooping lid had nothing to do with it. My question is how many of BEB sufferers have had some kind of eye surgery prior to the attack Thanks for reading my concern |

I did not have eye surgery prior to BEB My BE B came on gradually and unable to drive and watch TV without blinking sent me to the Dr. There are several causes of eye spasms - the origin of BEB can be neurological affecting both eyes and originating in the basal ganglia of the brain Trauma, medications, heredity can play a role One eye only affected could be hemi facial spasm - related to a facial nerve and blood vessel in contact with one another Refer to the top of the board for definition sites Check your chart with a knowledgeable person if you are not familiar with medical terminology. |

Do hope you find out the reason for your ptosis and spasms. Not knowing what is going on or the cause can be very upsetting. Take care and let us know. Marion |

I have not had eye surgery. I started blinking a lot about 8 years ago, then started squinting more, then (1-2 yrs ago) started having spasms. I do have one droopy eyelid, but it's not severe (doesn't obscure my sight); it's just a little lower than the other. Like you, I keep wondering what CAUSED this problem. I wonder about allergies/sinus problems because so many BEB people have them, and my symptoms began after I moved to a different state and got allergies for the first time ever in my late 40s. On the other hand, I was diagnosed with BEB in my mid-50s, which is exactly when the average person is diagnosed, so perhaps it was there all along just waiting to manifest itself ... and my mother has a benign essential tremor in her hand that's been there since she was young. I did read one theory about BEB maybe resulting from an abnormal level of brain plasticity. Maybe without that extra brain plasticity, my years of blinking wouldn't have progressed to spasming. (But I may be misunderstanding the theory.) One hope I have is that, with all the research into movement disorders like Parkinsons these days, there may be some breakthrough that helps BEB sufferers, too.
