incomplete eye closure and secondary corneal erosions due to botox

I am unable to open my eyes because of blepharospasm and unable to close my eyes fully because of botox. Has anyone else been troubled by incomplete eye closure after botox administration for blepharospasm? My understanding is that this side effect is limiting the dose of botox that can be given. I have had botox injections every 3 months for almost one year, with slightly increasing dose each time, but it still only works for 2 weeks at most. I've had corneal erosions because of the failure of my eyes to close completely and secondary drying of the cornea because of botox. During the day I apply Systane lubricating eye drops frequently and at night I use Refresh PM ointment and tape my eyelids shut with micropore paper tape. During the day I can't read, walk alone,or drive because of blepharospasm. Any suggestions?

Ouch, Kim! I'm so sorry that you are dealing with this!
Have you by chance gone to a different injector? If you aren't getting good results, and you've been seeing the same injector the whole time, it might be time to part ways. The BEBRF can give you suggestions of someone in your area who is highly recommended by other BEB'ers.
Also, if your Botox is only lasting 2 weeks, you may need it more often. I get it every 6 weeks and do very well, but there's no way I could make it longer.
One more thing - are you taking Omega 3's? I like Biotears, but there are other brands. These supplements can help with dry eyes.

Thanks so much, In Indiana, for your helpful suggestions and encouragement.

Do you find that some days are better than others? If so, have you identified any factors that seem to make a difference?

Try going on the web site for DRYEYE Zone . really good info for dry eye. Personally foud Systane to do more damage than good for me. Made my eyes very gritty. RETASIS a big waste of time and money. Try REFRESH drops ( the Box saysd for Lasik) . Much more tolerable. Anything with gycerine works for me

I have trouble with my eyes closing completely for about 3 weeks after botox. I find that using a clean pillowcase every day keeps me from getting an eye infection. I also have Fuchs Dystrophy that is a cornea problem, but I don't think that has anything to do with my eyes not closing properly. My injections last about 3 months. Hi, Kim-

I do have good days and bad days, and for me, some of it seems related to my cycle. At the beginning of my cycle, I always tend to feel more spasms, and there are times mid-cycle when I'm completely free of spasm.
I need to take good care of myself. If I don't get enough sleep, I'm more likely to have a bad eye day the next day.
If I'm in a lot of florescent lighting, the next day isn't as good. It seems sometimes I tend to pay for overdoing it the next day.

I can say that I think having the right person do the injections is extremely important. I've been dealing with this for eight years, and have had four different injectors. I had horrible side effects (like yours) with the first injector. The second and third were ok, but many people from the BEB support group encouraged me to see a forth injector, because his results were just so much better. I've been going to him for around 5 years, and almost never have any side effects, and do very well.
