Thank you Shirley in New Mexico and PDP I appreciate your feedback. I have been having this condition for 6 years it took me 2 years to get diagnosed. the reason I am so scared I guess is 1)this is your eyes being operated on and no turning back and 2)I just don't like surgery. No I am not trying to get rid of having botox injections, but with that being said I don't feel like they are doing me much good anymore after 4 years. there is a real good doctor here in Louisiana in Covington Dr.Kyle Acosta and I am considering him. I have already had one consultation with him, but I just also wonder if there is someone better than him. but I have also heard a lot of good things about him, and he has done quite a few blepharospasm surgeries. I am about to run out of room so I will chat later thank you both for the feedback. and my eyes are giving me fits tonight. one question were either one of you able to drive after the procedure? I feel like loosing my driving abilities is like loosing my freedom. well it already does. I will talk later as I have had my two grandchildren today and am not thinking very straight. thank you for the advice any more will be appreciated. Teresa |

Teresa, I drive with the help of ptosis crutch glasses, which seem to inhibit the spasms to an adequate degree. That may have nothing to do with the myectomy of course. Peter |

Dear Theresa, must be a coincidence,But I live in Slidell and also have Dr. Acosta. He has treated me for beb. for over a year.I had botox about 5 times, not much relief.I felt desperate and, after much trouble with the insurance company finally got approved for the myectomy, full, both eyes.It seemed like it helped at first. My eyes are just as bad with the spasms now and I just resort to prayer a lot, believe it or not I get a lot of spasm free periods. The choice is yours to make and I dont know of a better Dr. and Staff in Louisiana, really Super people. If you have the surgery, you will have to have someone drive you.I wish you a lot of luck, tell Dr. and Staff hello from Lloyd. Best to you Lloyd. |

Dear Lloyd I do not live in Covington but in des allemands. but my neurologist told me it would seem great at first then after about 6 months or so the spasms would start again and may be worse. about how long after the surgery did you start having spasms again? and was it worse than before surgery? and if you could go back would you do it again? I guess what I am wanting to know was it worth it? I am so tired of not being able to drive to read a book for myself or to my grandchildren, and so many other things I can't do that I did before the diagnosis. thanks for the input I really appreciate it and if you have the time to respond to my questions that would be nice too. good luck to you as well. thank you Teresa |

Dear Theresa,I would say the surgery was just another option to consider for this awful disease,so I tried it.I think the spasms came back soon, and just as bad.The only benefit is cosmetic, and I dont care for that.If this disease is from the brain, then I do not think the brain will tell the eyes to stop the spasms.I noticed when Dr.Acosta put numbing drops in my eyes the spasms always stopped. It made me wonder if it could be an eye condition, still dont know.I dont have a lot of faith in research, because if they could cure us like any disease, alot of people would be out of work.I just try to accept it and live with it.I keep praying, and get occasional relief.I dont want to discourage you, the surgery may help you I hope.It is definitely a life changing experience, Good Luck to you Lloyd. |

Teresa, the surgery itself, did not allow me to drive. Given the surgery and botox injections, I can sometimes drive. Not always, by any means. Definitely before the surgery, I totally stopped driving. After 15 years, I know my symptoms and limitations quite well and am able to safely drive at times and for a limited time frame. No long distance driving for me. Short trips are doable for me....if and when my eyes are doing well. It's a judgment call for any given day and time of day, weather conditions (skies) and how my symptoms are doing. So...the short answer is "sometimes, yes and sometimes, no". And yes, I totally agree with you that having to give up driving is a major issue for some of us. I still struggle with losing my independence. Shirley in New Mexico where we just had a brief snowfall.... |

I had partial Myectomy on top of both eyes. They were spaced apart.
I believe that overall I am better off but I also took what seemed to me to be a long time to get right again. I seem to suffer more from dry eyes than before , but it is still mainly worse when the botox is wearing off. Not the benefits I expected but I think overall better off. My eyesight seems to be getting worse ,but I can do well on the tests. I say It's up to you but think it over carefully. Brad |
