I want to ask if anyone has had this experience. You're doing pretty well with the eye spasms-- not too bad-- able to read, to look at people, etc. and then someone says to you, "Your eyes look so much better. You don't seem to be having any trouble." And as soon as that person says that, the attention is on the eyes and you start spasming!!!!

Jeannie:

Of course, I've had that happen. When your mind thinks about the problem it concentrates your attention on it and spasms.

Hi Jeannie

I am sure this is a common occurrence. As soon as you start to think about it, it takes over ! When the doctor stares at me to see what is happening prior to doing the Botox, I start to spasm even though I was sitting reading in the waiting room minutes before.

Oh Yes...all the time..and it makes me think that others think i am doing it for attention! i think what happens neurologically speaking is that our eyes spasm because our neurotransmission system is out of kilter. The basal ganglia, which seem to be involved in BEB have a lot to do with the control of movement..particularly "conscious control"..i.e they are affected by what we think. Like all faulty things..even a washing machine! our basal ganglia work fine at times...but as soon as the input to it changes...i.e. by someone making us direct our thoughts to that area and get a whole load more neurotransmitters firing off the balance goes. it's just like stopping a faulty washing machine that's working fine to add somehting and then find it doesn't work again... (can't you tell I'm doing the laundry at the moment!!!)

Hope that helps and is understandable... When people say aren't your eyes better..you can squeak with a laugh...no! no! don't say that..you'll upset my control system and they'll fuse again!!!

Much much love Claire

Jeannie, it happens to me all the time. I have considerably less trouble with my eyes if I am alone at home. My eyes will slam shut if a family member walks into the same room that I'm in. I immediately think about my eyes when I'm around others. I'm just a lot more conscious of it then.

Bummer!

Kathy, I'll try and put a new photo in the album in the next day or so. It's been really cloudy and misty and foggy here and Maggie is so dark that she doesn't photograph well even with a flash taken inside. I'm waiting to see if some pictures come out a little better when we get some sunshine. She is nine weeks old today and 18 pounds and NOT sleeping through the night. :-)

My eyes are worse too with the cloudy, misty and rainy days. My eyes do better on a bright sunshiny day. My light sensitivity and squinting is increased on overcast days. Many people with BEB are exactly the opposite and just goes to show how different we can be with what aggravates our symptoms.
