Hello to everyone on the board

It's been quite along time since I last posted. Here's the update so you are reminded of my story in short form

- Feb 2002 was the first time I noticed problems with my eyes

- July 2002 was diagnosed entirely because of your website and my dear sister in law who typed into the search engine eyelid disorders instead of eye disorders

- September 2002 saw opthamologist and had botox 50 units

- now I am still doing pretty good not too much of a problem just some blinking late at night and feeling a little bit dry in the eyes

should I wait till it's a big problem or go back and get slightly less of a dosage? I did have alot of effects that lasted about 1 1/2 months some swelling ,really dry eyes, it generally felt very strange and untill that settled down I thought it would be better to have the spasms. My spasms only bother me when I am relaxed. If I could be busy 24 hours a day I would be fine. I have an appointment for Jan 14th. I am so nervous about the side effects. Any suggestions? I feel like one of the lucky ones after reading how many units some of you have to take and for some the botox doesn't even work. You are all an inspiration. Thank you for your information and insight

Hi Ingrid, I get side effects (approximately for a month) after botox injections. I don't get swelling though, sometimes bruising - mostly double or blurred vision, burning pain and, of course, the dry eyes. I hope you are using LOADS of non-preservative drops during the day and a non-pres. gel at night (especially after the injetions) - covering the eyes with a mask helps keep the moisture in. Flax oil is supposedly good for eye moisture as well - you might think about trying that as well. Your doctor should test you on Jan. 14th to see if there is any botox left in your lids - and then decide if its time to inject again. I get 90 units, so you are still low at 50. Yes I understand about being busy 24 hours a day - if I could exercise for that length of time, my eyes would be open all the time - strange disease!

best wishes. June in Toronto

Hi June

I did experience double vision too. For me exercise was bad the only kind of busy was housework ,gardening, cooking and really concentrated work. I play piano so that is also okay but some reading is out of the question especially at night. How does the doctor test for botox left over? Thanks for your quick reply!

Ingrid

I, too think that you should keep your appointment. The doctor can have you squeeze your eyes very tightly closed and then see if he can open them with his fingers. If they are easy to open with you squeezing as hard as you can, then your BOTOX is still working.

Be sure and tell your doctor about your double vision and your other side-effects as the placement of the injections can be altered to alleviate some of these side-effects. For the dry eyes-you will just have to be vigilant and use the preservative-free drops through the day and an eye ointment at night like June recommended. You may or may not need the injections on the 14th. The BOTOX lasts varying amounts of time for people and over a period of time you will be able to determine how long they will last for you.

I don't blame you for being nervous about the side-effects. It's the pits when they can be as bad as the symptoms that you go in for.

I've had my share of side-effects.

Treatment can be a long, slow frustrating process.

Shirley in Arkansas who is glad that you posted again and gave us an update. :-)
