Computer Hint

Hi Everyone:

At work, during data entry, my eyes would spasm shut every time I looked up from the source document to the monitor. A handy co-worker cut a hole in my desktop, built a holding bracket below the desk, and lowered the monitor to desk level. No more need to look up, and no more spasms! This enabled me to keep working.

I think there are stock computer desks which are made this way.

Hi Barbara,

Several years ago (many, actually!) when I was still working as a school secretary, we went modern and I was given a computer in the office. The industrial arts teacher built such a desk starion for me, with the monitor down in a hole so that I looked down rather than up. i loved it and it was so comfortable to work on, even with bifocals. This was long before I was diagnosed with BEB, but it was just a good working set-up.

I wish I had that kind of desk now that I do have BEB, rather than the whole works setting on top of a regular desk. It would be much easier to work with. I think the changing view levels is hard for the eyes to compensate and makes them spasm.

Enjoy your new set up. How nice for the co-worker to do that for you.

I have an old printer stand that is lower than my desk and that is where my monitor sits so I look down at it. Makes all the difference in the world.

If you can't lower your computer, maybe you could make your chair higher. If the chair doesn't raise like mine, maybe you could use a pillow. Ann Doyle

Hi Barbara,

I've looked for a desk like that and haven't been able to find one. I think that Judy, our moderator has one. I know that they make them but wonder where they are sold. It would certainly be helpful for many of us. Thanks for the hint.

They can be bought at professional office furniture stores. They are a little pricey, but would be worth it. The only reason I didn't buy one was that I bought a new Gateway thin panel with the computer built in the base like the Apple and I couldn't find a desk like that I could use so I had to keep doing what I had been doing. Oh well.
