What great sons your mothers have!! I am 50 and was diagnosed with blepharospasms in Oct. 2001. I can relate to some of what your mothers are experiencing. Before botox injections it was just easier to sleep than try to keep my eyes open. When I was first diagnosed, I did just a little research. I just discovered this site last month. I've already decided that it is a great place to go for info and support. Finding out that someone else has experienced the exact same symptoms has been one of the greatest helps for me. Bumping into things, tilting my head back to see through the slits, walking with my eyes closed, squinting my way through grocery aisles are some of the symptoms that I have experienced. I take Prozac for depression which was diagnosed before the symptoms of blepharospasms occurred. I was going through a rather stressful time in my life and the blephs didn't help matters any. I have a great movement disorder specialist who gives me the botox injections. I asked her if stress could override the effectiveness of the injections and she told me that stress can do anything. I also have an 18 year old son who has experienced severe depression for several years. Because of his condition, I have learned a lot about depression. One of the biggest things I have learned is that most people do not know how to deal with people in depression. They just don't understand why the person can't just 'pull themselves up by their bootstraps and straighten up'. For some who are experiencing depression, it is impossibe for them to do anything. Just stay supportive of your mothers and share with them the info that you receive here. If at all possible it would be great if they could read at least some of the info for themselves. Hugs to both of you for being such caring sons. Jackie from Colorful Colorado, which may not be so colorful if we soon don't get some moisture. |

Dear JackieMy apologies as I have only just read your note, thank you so much. It is kind of you to be so comlimentary about Todd & I but - speaking for myself only - I feel that I am only doing what anyone would do. In fact, on the contrary, it is frustrating to feel so helpless when someone close is suffering.
I will definitely try to get my mother online - so you better look out! Claire W has already suggested a promising UK charity that looks as if it could help us (Claire - you are an absolute star).
Jackie, best wishes to you and your son and thank you for taking the time to write and for your thoughts.
Ken

Maybe I'm wrong but I think you should accept her just the way she is and not suggest anything. I know it only makes me feel worse. When her eyes get better, she'll get better. Right now she is sensory deprived. It doesn't make sense to listen to tv except news. Comedy is a complete failure. Too much depends on body language and facial expression. I can't knit or read or do get out . That leaves the bed and the radio.
For the last 3 days my eyes have been great most of the time and I am really enjoying it. I've spent a lot of money but haven't found the time to clean the refrigerator that has really started to smell. I think there must be something dead in it. Ann Doyle

I used to think you were such a nice girl Evelyn. You have been hanging around the wrong people. Ann D.
