Alternative Medicine Magazine Jan/Feb issue had a front cover caption about cosmetic Botox. "Botox: Is it worth it? Non-toxic alternatives Pg 33." It was a well done article and it did discuss the medical uses as the original reason Botox was made and as you might guess it wasn't slanted toward going out and using Botox for cosmetic reasons. It was pretty objective, but did offer healthier ways to prevent wrinkles. It mentions crossed eyes and uncontrollable blinking as the first uses for Botox 20 years ago and then goes on to say it has been approved for cervical dystonia and is being studied for urinary incontinence, migraine headaches, muscle stiffiness and excessive sweating. It also states it takes 3000 units of Botox to kill someone. The dose for cosmetic Botox ranges from 15 to 60 units and is almost a homeopathic dose. (It is no wonder that people who receive large doses might experience some side effects of flu like symptoms and fatigue. Most people with medical problems get 50 plus units. I know some with stroke, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, back pain, dystonias below the eyes may get several 100 units at a time.) This is not in article.

Delaine, I believe (if I remember corretly) some cervical torticollis patients receive 500 units of botox at a time. I'm glad to note that article covered medical uses as well as cosmetic. Thanks for sharing.June in Toronto

Delaine,Thanks for pointing out this article to us. Now that we have complained bitterly about articles promoting cosmetic uses of Botox, let's praise this publication's proper and helpful promotion of Botox as the medical salvation that it is for many of us.
So that we can properly praise them for their article, please let us know their address, and let's send them lots of positive feedback.
--- Lynn

http://www.alternativemedicine.com is the web site if you want to contact them. You're right it would be nice for them to get positive feedback. Maybe they would do more articles on BEB/Meige and other dystonias. When you get to home page, click on to "About Us" and then "Contact Us". Several email addrsses are listed. I emailed the first one.--modified by Delaine Inman at Thu, Jan 09, 2003, 22:51:27

Hmmm. I went to the website and browsed around but didn't find the article or, indeed, ANYTHING about Botox there. That makes it hard for me to write anything intelligent to them. Do you know where we might find the article? Thanks again, Delaine,

It's in the Jan./Feb. Alternative Medicine Magazine found in Health Food or large book stores. The Editor Burton Goldberg got my email and sent back one saying he had called a doctor friend of his and told him about my rare condition and gave me the doctor's phone number and assisntants name and asked me to call him. It was late Friday when I got the message so I'll call Monday. He said he had some ideas for me to try. I'll let everyone know his ideas.--modified by Delaine Inman at Sat, Jan 11, 2003, 10:38:27
