Hi friends:

I have Blepharospasm but a Myectomy operation gave me a new lease on life, however, the side effects of the medication do not permit to go back to work or be retrained.

I am writing on behalf of a friend who does not have a computer and therefore does not have access to this bulletin board. For years, she has been taking Botox treatments from a Neurologist with very little beneficial results. In September, she switched doctors and her new doctor is an Opthalmologist who is qualified to give the Botox injections. Apparently, the results from her new doctor mean that her eye is staying open and her face is straigthening out. However, ever since she has been taking the injections from the new doctor, she feels that her face is Flushing for two or thre hours at a time on most days. In addition, She feels that on some days, her forehead has a clamey (i.e. cold sweat)feeling. The only thing she figures could be causing this is the Botox.

Are there any of you who have had these types of side effects from the Botox and if so, was there something which could be done for it? Seems to me that any discussions about Botox did not reveal very many side-effects. In my case where I had good luck with my Myectomy Surgery for my Blepharospasm, I do not need to take the Botox treatments (I was in the 10% group on whom Botox is ineffective. It turns out that because my surgery was successful, it may have been a blessing in disguise that the Botox did not work on me).

On behalf of my friend, a million thanks for any information which may be posted regarding potential side effects of Botox.

Marcellin Chiasson, Nova Scotia, Canada

Interesting you should mention that your friend has been experiencing a flushed face. I have noticed that my face is flushed at times but I didn't even connect it to the possibility of being a side effect of the botox.

I'd be interested to know if there is a connection.

Glad to read that your surgery was a success.

It is my OPINION that the side effects you mention are caused by something else. For example, I recall that the first time I got Botox I immediately came down with the flu -- but I don't believe it was a side effect, since other members of my family also came down with it. However, I do believe that there was a connection, through stress. I believe that the stress of getting a new and somewhat scary treatment, with the added worry of how it would affect my employment, lowered my resistance to the flu bug and made me extra vulnerable to it.

I have been taking Botox, from a host of doctors, for 12 years, and have never had another incident even remotely similar to my first episode, or the effects you describe. My conclusion is that lowered resistance may be a problem, or it may be something entirely different. I notice that studies are currently being conducted on perspiration and other weird side issues, but I am not convinced yet that they mean anything.

Bottom line: worrying about it is worse than the real symptom.

Cheers,

--- Lynn

If your friend has Hemifacial spasm, there is an operation to cure it called MVD surgery. Short for Multivascular decompression surgery. The 7th blood vessel is sitting on nerve endings and they make a one inch by 3 inch opening behind the ear and put a teflon pad between the two.

One web site is www.hfs-assn.org/

If you want a web site similar to this one with people who have HFS talking try groups.yahoo.com/group/hfs-assn/ Ann Doyle
