I know many of you are keen photographers..now i can use a digital camera with a screen....but I can't close one eye when I look through an SLR view-finder. Does anyone else have this problem?..and how do you get round it if you do?

Claire

I have to cover or hold one eye closed with any camera.

I happen to be "left-eyed" (and right-handed which probably accounts for my being the klutz that I am), and it works out that much of the time my camera itself blocks my right eye. Otherwise, I have sort of trained myself not to pay attention to what I'm seeing through the eye that's not looking through the viewfinder. It may sound strange, but it does work for me.

Hi Claire,

I hold my left eye closed and get my right eye directly up to the view finder, which helps to hold the eye open. Since I still work with an "old fashioned camera", I have learned how to hold my eye closed and focus the lens all at the same time and with the same hand!! Of course the real problem is I can't tell if the subject is in focus because I can't wear my glasses when using my camera! Sometimes I wear my contact lenses and that helps, but most of the time I "see" with my intuition. If it FEELS like a good shot, then I know it will be.

Cheers,

Dee

Claire, I always have to use my left hand to hold my left eye closed and then my right eye will usually stay open and I can use my right hand to press the camera button. I often have the strange circumstance happen where I for the life of me cannot find the viewfinder through either eye. Has this ever happened to you. It is rather embarrassing because I am moving the camera all over the place while the subject is getting impatient. I really get frustrated when I try and take moving objects such as birds. I get the pictures back and I wonder what the heck I was taking a picture of as it is just the sky or scenery...Alan

Yup...I have the same problem...vanishing viewfinderitis!

I did an underwater photography dive as part of my advanced scuba diving training..trying to find viewfinder underwater...well...and you can't hold an eye closed with a diving mask on! I had hundreds of pictures of bubbles...or out of focus rocks.

I must say life is much easier now I have a screen on my digital!

Claire, I was fascinated by your comments about scuba diving which made me think of a question. I have hesitated taking scuba diving lessons(I would love to) because of my meige figuring I might have breathing problems which is the last thing I would need. We are going to ARuba tomorrow morning and I would love to take a few lessons and give it a try. I have done snorkeling before...Alan

Alan, I have a really good "Diving Doc"..I discussed the problem of Meige/Bleph Dystonia with him....he felt that at the moment i would keep a mouthpiece in as my meige is fairly mild....and what I do is use one with a tongueguard..it keeps it in place and seems to stop me biting so much...i do tend to bite through the mouthpiece!

If you can keep a snorkel in then you would keep a mouthpiece in O.K...and in fact you can easily breathe just by holding a free flowing air supply in front of your face in an emergency. Scuba training is done in very shallow water at first...or at least it should be. You could always do a try dive in a swimming pool. If things go wrong you can just surface. If you decide to do some diving make sure that the dive school and instructors are PADI registered and qualified. (Professional Association of Diving Instructors)

What you really need to do is to discuss it with a doc who scuba dives AND understands meige...few and far between I guess.

My doc realised that I am sensible enough to know my limitations...i wouldn't dive on bad days... I got a medical certificate because he trusted me to make sensible judgment calls! I think you will know yourself if it's going to be realistic...especially if you do your first dives in a pool!

Have a good trip to Aruba..where is it by the way!

Enjoy the fishes!

Claire
