(got yur attention didn't I) OK...well I got complete relief of symptoms for at least several hours. Doesn't sound like much, but it was a big thing for me because my botox had almsot compeltely worn off and I could barely open my eyes. What happened was a complete surprise and gave me an idea of something I (and others) could do (I think) when my eyes are REALLY bad and I have some special event that I need them open for. (You know how thos "social" events can be very embarrassing). Today I had my botox appt. So as usual I applied my EMLA-MAX cream obsessively every 15 minutes for 1-1 1/2 hours before I got the shots. Shortly before I went into my botox appt I realized my eyes felt completely (well 99% anyway) normal. No spasing and no feelings of wanting to shut. They felt better than they ever had - even at full effect of botox! Wow! I thought! I could apply this cream whenever I want my eyes to be REALLY good! I aksed my dr. about doing that and he didn't think that would be a problem. However after reading the drug insert I think I would only do it on special occasions where it is important that my eyes stay open. I already had my dr. draw a diagram exactly where he does my 12 shots and I applied it only at those places. For the rest of the day , even after the numbness had worn off my eyes were feeling 90% open. It could have been the botox that made them work for the rest of the day, but I doubt it because usually my botox takes about a week to take effect and NEVER immediately. Anyway, maybe this might be an idea for others to try. I am going to experiment with it (time and placement of cream). This was the best my eyes have been in 2 years for a consistent amount of time. I do suggest that you fully read the "drug insert" first or ask your dr. about it. I really don't know if it is a good idea or not, all I know is that my eyes stayed open for several hours when they were at their worste! Any comments? If anyone else tries this I would sure like to hear if it works for anyone else. Just make sure it is the EMLA MAX cream NOT the EMLA cream because it has 2% more lidocaine in it and that's what makes the difference I think. Shanasy - on a high with eyes wide open...still! Even Cynthia (a BEB BBr saw me today (waiting in the botox clinic together) in this condition and was surprised how well my eyes were doing. Right Cynthia? |

For sure! Shanasy, you looked GOOD! I agree that it may not be something you'd want to use continually, but for the special occasions when you really need your eyes open. Thanks for sharing that with us! I think you told me it cost about $45. I'm very happy for your positive experience today and wish you many more comfortable eye days!

Hi,I'm wondering if the Botox lotion or cream that was discussed on the Today show, which I was told was BotoxMax, is basically an ElmaMax type cream?
Thanks for the hint.
Take care,
Denise

In Canada Emla cream is sold over the counter. The last time I had my injections I ask the pharmacy if they had the emla max but they did not. Is it a prescription only in the US and how much is it.Thanks

It is prescription only. It is not always easy to get. And BTW it is EMLA-MAX not ELMA. If you are not familiar with it, it is used to help reduce the pain of the botox shots. I still can't believe how it kept my eyes wide open for awhile. You really need to know where to apply it though. And again, I wouldn't recommend it except for occasional use.Shanasy

Did you say you applied it at the injection sites ? and how long did it work for you? If left on too long for me , it makes my skin itchy and flaky.( this is only the emla, I haven't tried the emla max yet.)

Yes. I had my dr draw a diagram of where he shoots me. As for how long it workd, I am not sure because I got botox shots that day and I am not sure how quickly those effects set in. I would say for at least 2-3 hours and probably much longer because I don't imagine the botox could set in that quickly - but you never know. I will proably wait until my motox wears off in a few weeks and try it again. I only tried this once.Let me know if you try it!

I've experienced the same thing with the regular EMLA cream. I spread it on thick for 2 hours before injections. Once when my eyes were really bad over 2 years ago I noticed that my eyes felt better and stayed open. I mentioned it to my doctor and she said she hadn't heard anyone else say it seemed to help. I may give it another try when I am not going for Botox. I've never had it help quite that much before, so I thought it must have been a fluke. Glad you shared that info. Maybe it really was the cream.

I had a similar experience when I had a 2% lidocaine injection in my gums for dental work. All my BEB and Meige symptoms disappeared for several hours.
