EYE EXERCISES

A very kind young lady at my fitness club gave me a printout of eye exercises that she thought might help me. She teaches yoga at another venue where there are holistic people. She gave the beb information I gave her (for awareness purposes) to the acupuncturist there, wondering if he could help me as he seemingly does research (and we know our opinions about acupuncture don't we? - it doesn't work). Anyway her heart is in the right place.

My question is - we know that eye exercises most probably won't help beb, but will they do any harm I wonder? The exercises consist of: palming (as in yoga--rubbing hands together to become hot and placing them over the eyelids without undue pressure (this wouldn't hurt us at all and is comforting); front, sideways, up, down and rotational viewing; preliminary Nasikagra Drishti (prelim. nosetip gazing), near and distant viewing.

The printout of the exercises states " he eye exercises should be practised regularly with patience and perserverance. Do not expect instant cure or improvement. It takes years for the eyes (????) to become defective; it will also take time, a few months or more, before noticeable progress will be made. However, improvement will come as it has to many people who have adopted a yogic way of life and gradually reduced the power of their glasses.

I understand BEB IS NOT a disease/disorder of the eyes, but still wonder if consistent eye exercises would hurt us at all. Your comments would be appreciated.

hmmmm....

I would GUESS that eye exercises could have some effect on BEB, since exercising could alter in some way, the manner in which the muscles are able to perform. As to whether this is good or bad for BEB...??????

I've got mixed thoughts about that. If the exercises actually strengthen the muscles, I suppose that's good. But, what if they serve to weaken the muscles???? Any experts out there????

Or it could strengthen them to remain closed longer.

However, I am for trying anything non invasive and I don't think this would do any harm in my not a doctor mind. I just want someone else to do it first. Ann Doyle

It strikes me that this treatment, while not harmful, is completely misdirected.  Ours is not an EYE problem _per se_ but an eyeLID problem. It's a completely different set of muscles and nerves involved.

One of the earliest uses of Botox was to help strabismus, or crossed eyes, caused by eye muscles that impair eye coordination, and that is indeed an eye problem, but our spasms do not directly affect the eyeballs, only the lids and muscles outside the periphery. And heat etc. has VERY little effect on the 7th cranial nerve, whose misfirings cause the BEB.

But Ann, you used to always tell us you were a "doctor" ... did you lose your license while we were "off the air?"

I hope I see a smiley face Sally. It's hard to tell on the internet. I hope I didn't mislead anyone when I say, I"M not a DR. but I play one on TV. I better not say it anymore if someone takes me seriously. Ann

Hi this is Irene ,Sally you see your doctor every two months because you say its about 8 weeks. My doctor is seeing me every 3-4 months and that is a long time because the botox sometimes wear off earlier than usual. And about how many units do you get. I've gotten 46 units and everytime i get droopy eyelids or even bruises on them. I'd like for the neurologist to inject a little more to see if it will last longer than what it has.
Take care
Irene
